This is a reasonably decent cardioid mic for beginners who wanna move away from the traditional mic built into the desktops/laptops (or other devices that supports USB mic). It is for the most part better in every aspects comparing to those non-cardioid mics.While this is by no means a mind-blowing mic (and VERY far from it), it is definitely gonna change the way you sound, provided that it's configured AND used correctly. It's suitable for anyone who intends to use it for online/business meeting, streaming, podcasting, OBS, or anything of these sorts.≡ Physical buildThe build quality is about average or at best slightly about average in comparison to most others at this price range (around $50, excluding the suspension scissor arm). The entire microphone is made of plastic which seems a bit cheap given the price tag and it's rather lightweight and somewhat hollow which doesn't really inspire confidence. There are several others out there with [slightly] better spec and material/build quality with roughly the same price; though, they don't necessarily include a suspension scissor arm or a pop filter.It has some of the most common features such as gain adjustment and mute. It also has 3.5mm (for monitoring) and does have USB-C port so that's nice (a few others still use outdated Micro USB or even ancient Mini USB). Moreover, it has ENC (environmental noise cancellation) which is nice but it's far from impressive. The ENC and mute can be adjusted via touch control which some people might like but I personally prefer physical buttons.It comes with a shock mount pre-attached to the mic and it appears to work just fine although it's (again) entirely plastic just like the pop filter. The suspension scissor arm (and the accompanying c-clamp) is the typical one that costs about $10-15 and there isn't anything special about that either.≡ Features✔ USB port and 3.5mm portAs aforementioned, it does have a USB-C and 3.5mm port which is nice and they are for the most part located at the right/appropriate places although I would've prefer the 3.5mm port to be on either left or right side of the mic instead right in the center (pic 13). The USB-C port is located at the back in the center (pic 15) which is the ONLY place it should be for these USB-powered mics and it should never at the bottom as far as I'm concerned.✘ Gain control/knobThe gain control [conveniently] located at the bottom (pic 13) rather than a knob which I do appreciate although I wouldn't mind a simple knurled knob either. It's quite large (as you can easily see) and fairly easy to operate so that's pretty good. Unfortunately, even at max gain it appears to be fairly insensitive which severely limits the usefulness and usability of this mic. I have other $30-$40 mics that are at least twice as sensitive as this and this issue can be a deal breaker for some people (borderline for me). The gain control and be turned either left or right perhaps around 160° so the range is pretty decent given the circumstance.✔ LED touch controlIt opts to use touch control for LED (and mute/NC, discussed below) which I'm not exactly a big fan of although I do appreciate and understand many people would like this but I would've preferred a simple mechanical button for this because, amongst other reasons, turning LED on/off and/or changing lights isn't necessarily something I'll do often. As such, I don't really see the benefits touch control provides. In either case, it does have one and it works just fine without issue (i.e. reasonably sensitive and accurate).The LED (3 modes, and 7 colors to choose from) itself is just fine and I suppose it's always nice to have the option although I don't personally care for LED lighting, With that being said, the quality for the LED lighting is actually decent so this would be a great feature for those who want it. Btw, it has 2 dynamic lighting modes (not clear to me exactly what they are since it's not documented) and one single color mode which you can cycle (single tap of the LED touch control) through all 7 colors. Tap and hold to turn it off.✘ Mute/noise cancellationSimilar to LED, it uses touch control for mute and noise cancellation; however, it uses a single button for BOTH modes so something has to give. I should at this point make it clear that although the button appears to show that ONE half of the button is for NC while the other HALF is for mute, that's simply NOT THE CASE.There are NO TWO HALVES of this button; a single tap of this button ANYWHERE (left, right, center, or all) will mute (red) or unmute (green) the mic, and a tap/hold (for around 2 sec) will turn NC on (blue). NC can NOT be turned on (wouldn't be sensible when it's off, would it?) when the mic is on mute.So how well does NC work? Well, it's reasonably decent for the most part although it also reduces the volume and to a certain degree the clarity of the sound it picks up which is quite typical for these budget mic with NC features. In a nutshell, the identification of what constitutes noise is very tricky and more often than not certain frequencies of legitimate sound/voice are treated as noise and being cancelled (i.e. 180° out of phase) out.It works fine for the most part; however, since it reduces the volume of the input, you will likely need to be even CLOSER to it in order to maintain the same APPARENT QUALITY to people at the other end of the conversation. I'd say it's NOT particularly useful in a noisy environment especially with constant and/or high pitched noise present because it tends to more negatively impact the voice quality to a point where I don't find it desirable to have it turned on, at least according to the tests based on what's being reported to me from the other party.≡ ConfigurationThe mic is plug'n'play with most modern [versions of] operating systems. I've seen NUMEROUS times where people complained about the mic not being able to pick up sounds properly or that the sounds were weak, volume was too low, or the quality was bad and so on. While it's certainly possible (and it does in fact happen) that they got a dud, what's more likely happened was probably one of the following;✘ The mic was installed and ready for use; however, it has NOT been SELECTED as the [default] input device for whatever the app being used. As a result, the existing/old mic picked up the voice/sound where it's probably too far to pick up the voice properly or the voice's simply not being directed at the old mic. This resulted in poor reception and people might think it's the new mic that failed to do its job when in fact it wasn't even doing anything because it hasn't been selected as the mic to receive inputs.✘ Most, if not all, of these cardioid mics require the voice/sound to the directed at specific area of the mic, usually at the FRONT. A few of 'em takes input directly at the 'TOP'. Therefore, if you speak into the sides or the top, your voice WILL sound MUFFLED, far away, broken, or just of low quality in general.≡ Sound qualityWell, perception of sound is a tricky business and I'm no sound engineer or even someone close to an audiophile. With that being said, the overall sound quality of this particular mic is just fine; however, the biggest issue I've found is that it requires VERY close prolixity in order for the mic to pick up sufficiently clear sound which in my book is NOT exactly a HIGH quality mic (not saying it's low btw).Btw, the max sampling rate is 48 kHz (as most others are) with 24bit depth (some only have 16bit) for those who care. I've included a sample video so you can decide for yourself. The first 30 sec is from the original source and what comes afterwards is the recording by this mic situated about 40 cm (16") away from the speaker which is the typical maximum of what these [budget] cardioid mics are sensitive to [the most]. The gain is at its max btw with NC turned OFF.While the sound quality appears to be just fine, it does sound rather MUFFLED that overemphasizes low frequency range in some way. This can be fixed or corrected in post-processing of course but if you are looking for a 'full range' mic, this is not it so look elsewhere.≡ ValueAll things considered, this is a decent (slightly above average overall taking into account all aspects of the mic) cardioid USB microphone that performs reasonably well with respect to audio quality. It's important to note again that it does NOT support 24bit/192kHz which some others at this price range do offer.In either case, if you don't care about the issues described above, then this might be a suitable mic as the sound quality is reasonably decent and quite comparable to most others in this price range although it does outperform most others with respect to other features including accessories and whatnot which certainly adds value (only when the product works as expected) to the entire kit. It's somewhat reasonably priced at $70 for what it provides and its overall build/material quality, features, usability, and performance. Your mileage might vary.
