Absolutely wonderful book.
Had a hard time putting it down.
A must read for sure for the ones that like love and adventure!

A story of unbounded love that sweeps from the snowy Scottish highlands to the exotic pleasure-domes of Constantinople to sultry intrigue-ridden Naples...the tale of Catriona, Countess of Glenkirk and Francis, Earl of Bothwell is one of the great romances of all time. Bothwell, who defied the wrath of his King to possess the woman he loved, and Catriona, mistress to the King, wife to a Count, and lover to the most courageous, tender Lord in all Scotland...2 people who want only each other, and because it can never be, set the world afire with Love Wild and Fair. Bertrice Small is my favorite author. I have been reading her novels since I was 15 years old. This is one of her best. Based on a real herorine, Catriona Hay is an amazing woman with cunning and quick wits to help her finally achieve what her heart wants most-Francis Bothwell.

Catriona Hay is the Great-Granddaughter to Janet Leslie (Cyra in The Kadin). She is betrothed since childhood to a distant cousin Patrick Leslie. Their marriage is a pleasant one, but the lust of King James threatens to destroy Cat's happy home. When she is betrayed by them both, she turns to Francis, her closest friend and cousin to the king. As they fall in love, the king threatens to tear them apart. Time after time, they attempt to be together only to find themselves ripped apart. Just when Cat and Francis believe they are finally able to be together, Cat is taken away and finds herself facing her great-grandmother's secret past. This is an historically riveting tale of a woman bound by honor to her family, who tries desparately to find her way to the man who would always love her.

what a lucky girl cat was! all her men are very different from each other. patrick is like a lot of men,(dumb about women)he truly don't understand this unique women. she also experience's the great and sensual love of pasha, and then there is francis...his personality and character is of a very normale man, he is almost boring with his love for cat. But it is a very true love so therefor is the greatest love of all. I personaly love patrick the best, and i wept with him for his lost love, what a stupid guy, oh well its his own fault! I would love to see ms. small pickup patrick in the america's and try on this type of setting for the proud scots'man! I love all ms. smalls books so far this is my favorite! ......I still love patrick!

This book was incredible! Cat and the Earl almost make you burn your fingers they are so hot together! This was one of Ms. Small's best. Any true fan of hers will enjoy this one. As will all of her books, the story swepts you from country to country and a lot of political and religious manipulations and intrigue. Through her books, I have learned a lot of history, which I've found to be true answering trivia and game show questions! LOL Anyway, lessons aside, all of her books are always enjoyable and always take you on a whirlwind ride.

I loved the twisting plots! Taking Cat's ordinary life with her husband, Patrick, and making it life-and-death struggle with the monarchy puts me on the edge of my seat, wanting to reach in and tear James Stuart's head off! Her love with Bothwell makes it, (the pain of her life), all so much better! Thumbs up! Great read!

Bothwell is the man of my dreams he is strong and sweet and can handle anything he is a goddess. He's a bad boy/good boy he can take me anytime any place.

Now, don't get me wrong.
I love Francis Stewart-Hepburn. He is a great hero. But the way Cat gets treated over and over and over and over... well after awhile its just like she's trying to make the book longer.
I also find it unbelievable that one woman could survive all of that.
However, it is still a good book, and its nice to get a look at James Leslie's Mother.

5.0 out of 5 stars Puts the "grand" in "grand historical romance" !

Bertrice Small is one of the Grand Doyennes of historical novelists! This one navigates from Scotland to Constantinople in the sixteenth century, and creates a doozy of a heroine to adventure in it. One of her best, and that's saying a lot, given the large number she's created! Rich in details and color, not to be missed!

There is no one like the original Beatrice. 40 years ago as a child I fell in love with her authentic and fiery passion and description to detail. Her sense of adventure was unparalleled! In the the nineties she began taking guest authors to help her and you saw a sharp and yet gradual decline of her authentic self. Let me fill you in. I reread a core of her books when I want beauty, true sexy passion, and sumotuous royal feasts. The original Skye and the one about her daughter and the follow up one about Skye and this one and the one about her brothers wife Aiden and Conn are all you need. Do NOT read the Skye legacy series about her great granddaughters where all passion and detail is lost or fake..... probably she was sick and farmed it out. By the way The only exception is you should read the first book about Jasmine her grand daughter across seas that was VERY spicey and follows her to court. However don't read the second Jasmine book which I remember from the nineties had a second co authors name on the book and lost most of the authentic Bertrice. It is up to you if you want to be mildly bored. THIS book is the real Bertrice filled with passion and intrigue and detail and food. Yes there is pain and danger but please..... you have to have that for urgency and it ends well.
