In January 2021, as Kamala Harris was sworn in as vice president of the United States, she lay her hand on a Bible that had belonged to her hero Thurgood Marshall. A courageous and brilliant lawyer and jurist, Marshall won the 1954 Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education, ending legal racial segregation in America―a significant step in the continuing struggle of Black Americans for equal treatment in their own country. In 1967, Marshall became the first Black Supreme Court justice, and he continues to inspire decades after his death.

This accessible collection of Marshall's own words spans his entire career, from his fearless advocacy with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in the 1940s and 1950s, to his arguments as the first Black solicitor general under LBJ and his Supreme Court opinions and dissents. Introductions to the writings provide historical and legal context.

Most know about Thurgood Marshall's service on the U.S. Supreme Court. However, many folks have no idea about the deep South environment he ventured into in an effort to get fair trials for Negroes who were accused of various and sundry crimes they did not commit. Corrupt criminal justice systems and the human components -- judges, prosecutors, district attorneys, and sheriffs made sure that one-sided justice was meted out. However, his fearlessness, training, incredible legal mind, support of the NAACP, and an array of legal scholars made Marshall a formidable opponent. He knew the law and he knew how best to apply the nuances and intricacies of that law in the most difficult, high pressure, seemingly hopeless situations. Consider Marshall challenging Supreme Court decisions such as Plessy v. Ferguson and the laughable 'separate but equal' rulings applying to K-12 schools! The law of the times did have to run to keep up with this brilliant attorney and (later) Justice.

In current jurisprudence, the U.S. Constitution is either a Living thing, or an Immutable document,. Americans, on the right or on the left, may search fruitlessly for answers as to how the law ought to work, until, hopefully, they turn to the eloquent and inspired words of one of the greatest Supreme Court Justices, Thurgood Marshall. This collection of quotations in Marshall’s own words, lucidlly annotated by attorney Cathy Cambron, will powerful and cogent arguments that the Consitution is indeed a work in progress.
Explore this inspiring book, combined with its companion volume (also assembled by Cathy Cambon), The Way Women Are: Transformative Opinions and Dissents by Ruth Bader Ginsburg. We must revive the wisdom of these two great jurists if there’s any hope for us to “do the right thing and let the law to catch up.”
