After a few years of Switch titles knocking it out of the park with their latest entries in the series, I didn't expect Nintendo to come around and do the same with Kirby. Particularly because they'd already released one game on Switch, Star Allies, which was a less-than-great standard-fare Kirby title that didn't really wow anybody.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land delivered, though. It's Kirby's first truly 3D adventure, and they did an *excellent* job translating the 2D gameplay to 3D - or really, what feels more like 2.5D in some ways, kind of like Crash Bandicoot might. The game levels are linear, this is no Super Mario Odyssey or anything - but Kirby works great that way. The art is charming, the controls smooth, the levels well designed with great powerups, fun enemies, but the best part is the replayability -- every level has challenge missions to check off, there's extra challenge levels to beat that will let you upgrade your weapons more, and the post-game is great too -- there's a whole extra remix hard-mode world to beat after you finish the main game, there's boss rush modes that are more compelling than most (I usually don't care about boss rushes, but this game's interested me because it actually has new, unique bosses in the hardest boss rush level).

I think one of my only complaints is that I wanted more - specifically with the mini-games, there's some cute little mini-games in the village you construct, but you've built everything pretty quickly and the mini-games are very very simple and don't last long. The "Labyrinth"-style tilt-a-maze game is really fun, and it feels like it would have been easy for them to make more than 3 levels for it but unfortunately that's all you get. Still, this is just a small little bonus thing, it's not the game's main content.

Would I recommend this? Absolutely. If you've never played a Kirby game before this is a fine place to start. I would put it up there with Super Star and Planet Robobot as one of the best games in the series, and being 3D it will probably appeal to more people these days than those other titles. The game is also kid-friendly like any Kirby title, but don't expect them to 100% this one because that boss rush mode and the extra post-game world get tough.

After reading reviews I picked this game up for my kids, who are relatively beginner gamers. I’ve struggle to find good games on the Switch that they can largely play by themselves. This games was just the ticket!

Right from the start you get options to make the game easier and more kid friendly. It take a minute or two to get into the co-op mode, but fear not, it’s there. Note that it’s not a split screen game. The second player is tethered to the main player, Kirby. So as Kirby moves, the second player is forcibly move towards player 1. This is helpful if you’re playing with a child or beginner but can be frustrating as player 2 may want to explore, but are pulled away and back to player 1. It’s also challenging if the weaker player is Kirby (player 1).

Also important to note that both players are not Kirbies. The second play does not have the ear powers and cannot use the various power-ups. They do have a spear and can do a variety of attacks with it though.

Gameplay itself is varied and fun, with an escalating difficult level as you progress. You fight a boss at the end of each “land”. Boss fights are are well done and not over cheap, so makes them fun and not frustrating. Each “land” has a theme for its levels, and are bright and fun. With a variety of areas like a mall, forest, frozen area etc.

The most fun part of the game is Kiby’s eating ability. You can inhale a variety of things that affect gameplay. These vary from power-up and weapons to enemies to objects in the world that help progress and find secrets.

Finally, each level is replayable and has a variety of goals you can achieve on replay. This is great for kids learning to play as they can replay a level with a specific goal and get more used and comfortable playing.

Bottom line: a bright and fun game that is both playable and enjoyable for younger gamers. Fun abilities and couch co-op round this out to being a great family game. One of our favourite Switch games. Buy it.

My kids are still playing the game. Great time killer on long card rides and the game is easy enough there is no frustration quitting. I also have put some time into the game and find it fun to play

The couch co-op is super fun, my nephew and I had a blast playing it together. My nephew can’t stop talking about the characters, he absolutely fell in love with them, so it was well worth the money!

In my opinion it's the best game ever made, have been gaming since 1990. The gameplay plus the pacing is unrivaled. It's one new fun experience after the other, it's so good I never want it to end. It's better than any Mario, Xenoblade or Zelda. It's as much fun as they could pack in per square inch it's ridiculous.

Kirby is extremely, extremely adorable. My 5-year-old son loves playing this game. The game itself is quite short, and some levels towards the end are a bit challenging. But the art style is really adorable. It's not the same type of game as Mario Odyssey, so don't approach it with the mindset of expecting something like Kirby Odyssey, or you might be disappointed.
