Quick and Easy way to scan negatives (and slides)

Quick and Easy way to scan negatives (and slides)
I have hundreds of old 35mm negatives and slides that I want to digitize. I did my homework and this seemed to be a good cost/value balance. I compared it to an older Plustek 7600i scanner (2010). The Kodak gives better results with negatives than the Plustek, which was more grainy?. For slides, the Plustek is better because the colours are more true and it's sharper. With a little post-processing, the Kodak results are quite acceptable. The biggest advantage of the Kodak is the speed at which you can scan negatives. The Plustek takes about a minute per scan because it also scans for dust. The Kodak takes about 2 seconds! The attached samples were all scanned on full Auto mode.

I has a previous Kodak photo and slide scanner that I purchase about 8 years ago unlike this new one it did not have a display so you could not adjust scans except on a laptop after the fact so this is a big improvement.

On thee other hand the previous scanner allowed you to feed in negatives and the scanner would pull them through.and regardless how you fed them through the machine would automatically adjust the orientation... this was a huge advantage that should still be on the new scanner.

Amazingly good quality output at 22 mega pixels. Colour depth and resolution is very good. Same for Slide and Negative. The viewing screen shows full colour for negatives. It is very easy to use. Just push the media into the tray make sure it shows properly on the screen, press the button on the top. That's it.
Connect the usb cable to a computer it acts like a usb drive.
If they would put a bit of felt in the film and slide path so it not so easy to disturb the media when scanning that will be great.

I was unsure whether this scanner would be suitable for scanning the negatives and slides that I have. It's very easy to use and I am very pleased with the quality of the scans that it produces. I've scanned about 1,000 slides and negatives so far. Most were colour negatives but I have also scanned b&w negatives as well as slides. I've scanned 135 and 126 formats. It's extremely easy to upload the files to my pc with the usb cable.

I really wanted this scanner to work, but it just wouldn’t. After struggling to format a SD card, I sent an email to Kodak, asking what the problem might be. They told me to use the most basic type of 32GB SD card. Their response to me: “suggest just using a standard SD card nothing with Micro, Plus, Extreme, or Ultra”. I double checked the manual and specs to see if I missed this, but I couldn’t find that information. Success. I could now scan negs to the correct type of card. However, I was only able to get 10 images scanned before the scanner stopped recognizing the card. Thinking it might be full, I put the card in my computer and saw that there was over 80% space left. I put the card back in the scanner and turned it on, only to have the power cut out. Several attempts resulted in various combinations of the power randomly cutting out on me when I pressed buttons trying to complete a scan. I really spent way more time and effort trying to get this to work well and reliably. I am very disappointed with this scanner product and don’t understand why it gets so many good reviews.

I am using this tool right now while writing this review. This is an expensive, rather primitive tool. If slide frames are thin enough I can process the whole box (36 slides) in 10 minutes. I am using an old 8MB card without any problems. After processing one box (I have more than 1,100 slides altogether), I removed the card and plugged it into my laptop. All slides have a name coming from the box number. After a few hours, the device did not want to start properly, so I changed the USB port in my laptop and it works fine.

The viewing screen is smaller than I expected but adequate. The text in the manual is tiny and the instructions are not that well explained. I will leave enhancement until I get the images onto my computer. Uploading to your laptop is quick and easy. I’ve only used it for slides so far, and it loads easily, a constant feed from the side. I have all types of slides, cardboard, thin and thick plastic, and they all fit. Overall I am pleased with the purchase. Note that it requires a photo card, not included, and the card must be not more than 32 MBs. I only found that out from the manual after purchasing a 128 MB card when I ordered the scanner. Price reflects the Kodak brand name, production cost must be a LOT less.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick and Easy Amateur Slide & Negative Viewer/Scanner
Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2024
Verified Purchase
Though maybe not the highest quality or fullest-featured transparency scanner, this product is GREAT for quickly and easily reviewing and scanning old family slides and negatives. The native 13MP image sensor is fine for the amateur family slides and snapshots from old cameras, in my opinion. 35mm negatives and slides produce 4320 x 2880 pixel image files, which seem to be about as clear as I would expect the old film to produce, if the original photo was sharp and clear (largely a function of the camera quality).

Reviewing and scanning color negatives is especially nice, as it is very difficult to post-process color negatives in software - you can't just "invert" a color negative accurately with most photo editing software. With this viewer, you can just select "Color Negative" and view (and scan) your negative strips as if they were positive slides! Very handy and useful, something you can't do with just a light box and a magnifying glass.

I also really appreciate the auto-exposure feature. It automatically compensates for over- and under-exposure in the slide or negative, making it quick and easy to correct and scan amateur shots. It seems to do quite well with compensating for a wide range of over- and under-exposed shots. The color correction feature, if needed, also seems to do a decent job with some fiddling - sometimes saving the extra step of post-processing some color corrections in photo editing software.

I do wish they had a mode for over-scanning some slides and negatives, to reduce the auto-cropping of slides and negative frames. As other reviews have described, the scanner crops the images a little from what is usually available on the film. This is handy for most images, since it cleans up the edges by cropping off the "fuzzy" edges and rounded corners on slides and some negatives - but sometimes you need to capture the very edges of amateur shots for some critical details. With this scanner, you sometimes need to make small sacrifices over what might have been possible if you could scan more of each film frame, and do your own edge clean-up when needed.

The only other issue I had was with some old non-35mm square negatives (127 format film, 40mm x 40mm image sizes). I WAS able to scan most of these negatives in a 35mm form by NOT using a film adapter (just the slide carrier), and selectively cropping a fair amount from the top and bottom, and a little from the sides. But it would be nice to be able to better handle more of the 40mm square negatives that seemed to be popular in the 50s and 60s or later.

And REALLY, Kodak - not allowing the date to be set earlier than 1980?? Come on! Those old negatives and slides from our parents and grand-parents are still relevant today! My photo editing software allows the date and time "Taken" on digital images to be changed (EXIF "DateTimeOriginal"), but apparently the scanned date (EXIF "DateTimeDigitized") from the Kodak scanner is still retained in the image meta data. This causes issues with some handling in my photo organization software (Photoshop Elements Organizer).

Overall, I am very satisfied with this scanner for my main purpose of easily viewing and digitizing old slides and negatives!
