Big dog approved
I had been eyeballing this inflatable kayak for a couple of years. My main hope was to be able to take my almost 70lb dog kayaking with me, but was concerned her nails would puncture the plastic. We are now 2 seasons into this thing and it has survived! I should note that I take out the front seat so that the dog has enough room to walk around and lie down, but if someone was okay with a big dog sitting in their lap it could probably work with a big dog plus 2 people. Keep in mind that my dog is pretty calm in it, so she doesn’t dig or anything, but she can stand up in it and walk around without me fearing she’s going to puncture it. It tracks really well in lakes and I would feel fine using it in a moderate to lazy river. My main complaints are similar to what others have pointed out: the seams along the edges are poorly placed, so they start to wear on my hands while paddling, and I am not really a big fan of the paddles themselves. Also the carrying bag isn’t great (I broke the zipper after the first use) but I only use it about 3 times a year so I can’t complain, and I don’t really have to carry it anywhere anyway. I like this kayak so much that I’m considering upgrading the paddle and maybe just using some duct tape on the seams, because it’s otherwise very good bang for the buck for the amount that I intend to use it. Lastly I should make note of the pump… it’s not great but it works (although I usually use an electric pump instead because it’s faster and less back breaking).

This is a great inflatable kayak that punches well over its weight (pun intended). Despite its low price tag of $89 CAD (when I purchased it on July 12, 2016), the kayak is made from very solid material, is stable in the water and handles well in the water.

Defective: Out of the four kayaks my friends and I have purchased, none of them have come with a patch repair kit (despite the box and the Amazon.com product listing saying it's included). You can purchase a comparable kit for ~$12. One box was missing an instruction booklet (PDF available online on Intex's website) and a water ringlette that's part of the paddle. Another box had a paddle where the shaft was too long for the paddle to snap in properly. Make sure you put everything together and give it a go during the warranty time period!

We've taken it out now in total four times: Shallow rivers (eg. Grand River near Kitchener) result in the skeg hitting the bottom of the kayak. But despite the abuse the entire way down the river, the skeg was visibly scratched but did not detach from the boat. The bottom surface of the boat showed no wear at all. Removing the skeg makes it very "spinny" which made it very interesting as you might find yourself "drifting" (going sideways) but does significantly reduce hitting the bottom of shallow bodies. My suggestion is to keep the skeg on because it drastically improves the kayak's straightline ability.

We've been into the Toronto Inner Harbour on a calm day, and there was no feeling of danger at all from capsizing or rocking from waves.

The weight limit is 160kg (confusingly, 180kg is also listed on the kayak itself as persons + gear), but I am confident that the kayak can carry more than this. For a short span on the water, one of these kayaks carried three adults with no problems (two in seats and one perched on the back end of the kayak). With three compartments, I'd like to see how much these could carry before it came close to tipping over. Furthermore, any water that does get into the kayak pools under the sides of the kayak in a pocket between the inflatable side and inflatable bottom.

Note that this is not a small kayak - two adults can fit comfortably (because it is inflatable, you can comfortable squeeze your feet in between the chair and the sides of the kayak even for people who are 6'). With both seats in place, you'll still find plenty of room for bags behind the back seat and in the front. The seats aren't affixed to the kayak, instead they velcro on, so if you want to go fishing, you could go by yourself with just the back seat and place your tackle box/cooler/other gear in the front (IMO you *could* do this with 2 people, but it would be tight).

Inside the box is a bag holding everything: the kayak (deflated), pump, instructions, 2 kayak paddles (breaks down into 5 parts each), skeg (I didn't see a patch kit). Set up for the kayak is quick and easy. Each valve is labelled, so you simply have to fill each compartment in order #1 (base), #2 (side) and #3 (side) using the pump (do not attach a cap!), then fill #4 and #5 (front and back skirt) which like another reviewer we initially we found difficult to seal - don't squeeze the valve and the air will stay in! Next, pump up the seats and squeeze them between the walls and onto the velcro.

Depending on the conditions, you might consider closing the scupper (drain valve) on the end of the kayak (eg. if you're significantly overweight!). Because the kayak is lightweight, you can set up the kayak in any open space, load it up with your gear then carry it down to the water using the convenient handles on front and back (you will need two people to carry it).

The paddles aren't great, you might consider selling them on Kijiji in order to subsidize purchase of real paddles elsewhere. But at this low price, the paddles are pretty much a bonus.

If you are kayaking in Canada, note that aside from this kit, you will need to buy a Transport Canada approved PFD (easily found at Amazon/Walmart/Canadian Tire), 50ft buoyang heaving rope, sound signalling device (eg. pealess whistle) and bailing device (eg. a plastic cup, a cut plastic water bottle, etc.). If you are on the water at night, you will also need a light to be visible to others. The
Fox 40 Classic Boat Safety Kit  meets all the above requirement (except PFD) and can be found at Amazon/other retailers on sale for ~$15 CAD.

Because of its large size, it is difficult to clean properly. It does not fit well into a conventional bathtub and attracts dirt and dust off the driveway when hosing/towelling it down in the backyard. I haven't found a solution to this yet.

Would highly recommend to friends and family without question.

EDIT (2017-06-06): One year later and it's going strong, though we managed to puncture one of the four while were packing in a gravel lot (probably our fault to compact it against sharp gravel! Amazon.ca graciously provided us with a repair kit and we're excited to take it out again this coming Summer.

I bought a couple 3 years ago, Still have them, enjoyed them at least 30 times since there. They are in perfect shape, and them never leaked air. We are really happy and advise 1000000%. Sure they are pretty pretty good for the budget, but not intended for Professional kayaking.

Excellent kayak. Pump does not indicate PSI. Well, I guess it is ok when we didn’t sink. Ok to paddle with 1 seat at the front and just put the seat close to the back. Still reasonable steady. Inflate and deflate ok. The fin won’t come off once put on. Ok to fold it without breaking the fin into the carrying bag. Good for the price.

I had read a TON of reviews on this kayak, but still had my reservations about getting an inflatable one. I was very surprised by the build quality of this one and also the amount of time that it takes to inflate. It is easily, fully inflated in ten minutes with one person (me) and then just as easily deflated after use, packed up and put away in the bag that came with it. The paddles are sturdy and of good quality with metal shafts and again, the kayak itself is very thick material and it's reasonably comfortable even with two average sized adults on board. The other thing that I will say, is that, I was even more surprised at how easy the kayak was to manoeuvre. I didn't expect it to be as responsive to directional change as it was. We used it for the whole summer, got out about 4-5 times and even in choppy water, we were able to get around quite successfully with no problems. If you're on the fence about getting one of this, I can't recommend it enough!

I bought the 2 person kayak when it was on sale and I am happy with it so far. The boat came with everything advertised. It didn’t take long to inflate with the pump that came with it, and I didn’t feel like I’d had a work out when I was done. The instructions were easy enough to follow, but it isn’t building rockets. I took the kayak out a week or so after I got it and it is very comfortable and sturdy. I went out on a windy day, and forgot to put the skeg on and still didn’t have much trouble keeping it straight. I’m 5’-9” and 200lbs and felt perfectly comfortable and stable. I’m not sure if I’d go out with another person my size but that’s not why I bought it. It does have some weight to it. Everything fits easily into the bag it comes with, I was even able to put my pfd in there. But, the bag isn’t made of the strongest material. I’d say it’s a good 30lb so be ready for that if you have to carry it any distance. I would have gladly paid more for this if it came with a better quality bag with shoulder straps. At any rate, I’m happy with this purchase.

I considered the pros and cons to inflatable vs hard shell and bought this one.

Inflatable is cheaper, lighter, and takes up less space.

Two things that have me somewhat regretting my purchase
- punctured the side. It took some time to find the hole and the patch kit was no good so I had to buy a glue for it. There seems to be a leak on the other side, so now I need to find where. It could easily take up to an hour to deal with this since you need to find the hole, dry the area, seal the hole, and wait for it to dry before going back in.
- a windy day can send you in circles.

Great option if you don’t have a lot of space or are curious but don’t want to invest lot of money yet.

What is there to even say about this product, except this is probably the best money I've ever spent! I ordered 4 of them for me and my friends, and have taken them out a few of times already. I have terrible back problems and spend almost every weekend kayaking and camping, so finding ways to alleviate that in amy way is huge. I have issues with prolonged time in canoes and kayaks, I do not have that issue with these inflatables. We have actually connected them together while people take naps in them. Our last trip, 4 people fell asleep while attached, or in the front spot.

They are definitely what you would expect for an inflatable, as far as speed and maneuverability goes. They don't sit deep, and are light on the water, so they take a little more effort to steer than a regular kayak. I'd put it somewhere between a canoe and a kayak for how it controls. You also sit lower than a normal kayak, so heavy paddling isn't as easy. I definitely recommend them for more narrow, fast moving rivers where you're doing more steering than paddling. Or if you want to just float around on a lake. If you're looking to get somewhere in a hurry, the K2 challenger might be more what you're looking for, especially if you aren't concerned with having space for gear.

The durability of these is outstanding. When I first got them, my girlfriend and I took one out, just to see how it stood up to obstacles, before throwing a bunch of our friends in them. I let it run into a bunch of sticks, rocks, and other deadfall without a single issue. We basically just let the current take us wherever it wanted. The bottom drug across some rocks in low points a few times. In the end there was no noticeable damage whatsoever. It does come with a patch kit if there is ever an issue, I also carry a roll of flex tape with me and keep one of the pumps in the kayak.

Our last trip out, we went on a very busy weekend, where the river was full of thousands of people drinking and being stupid. We had people running into us, crashing right in front of us, and pushing us into log jams. These things are absolutely untipable. Where normally you would worry about flipping when you get hung up on a log or rock, that doesn't happen with these. Imagine being a bumper boat floating down the river. Great for people with little experience.

How compact these are is a another big selling point. I don't have any way to transport that many, and renting every week was getting expensive. I managed to fit 4 of these, along tunts, airmattresses and other camping gear for 4 people, in the trunk of my tiny 350z. These also provide a decent amount of space for gear, especially if you are riding solo. We do a lot of multiple night trips and regular kayaks don't cut it. I bought cooler tubes to attach to the back of each one, for extra gear storage and it's worked like a charm.

The paddles aren't the greatest, the tips are a little flimsy, so you can't really use them to push yourself off, they also have a tendency to drip on you a little bit, but for the money, I can't complain. I also really like that they break down easy.

The set up is a breeze, I use an electric pump and top them off with the hand pump. You have to be careful not to overinflate with the hand pump. The kayak comes with a gauge and markings on the tubes you match it up with to tell when it's fully inflated. I've read 1 or 2 reports of people popping a seem from overinflating. You can also buy a 3 year warranty for $7.99 I highly recommend doing it. I keep saying, if this kayak lasts me 3 years, I will be more than happy.

As with anything you want to keep nice, it's important to spray them down with a hose and let them dry in the sun when you get home. Nothing worse than having mildew growing on your kayak because you put it away wet!

Since I bought mine, I've had at least 6 friends also order one, as well as referred numerous people on the water to Amazon for ordering. I plan to get many more of these, and some or the challengers.
