It has so many Quality-of-Life changes built into the phone that I would've never thought about. Here's some examples:
- It has adaptive charging, which means it calculates the perfect rate to charge the phone so that it can charge to 100% before your next alarm will trigger
- Even though adaptive charging is on by default, it has the option to disable it temporarily so that you can do a quick fast charge if you're in a rush
- It tells you up until what time the phone will last until with the charge left on it
- When you copy something, it has a shortcut button to paste it immediately instead of having to hold down on the screen
- Taking a screenshot and cropping is so much faster
There's a bunch more QoL changes that I can't think of off the top of my head. Also, I realize some of these features might've been developed in earlier models, but it's still nice to have.
So, long story short, if you are looking for the best camera phone with a sub $700 price tag, this is it.
The CPU and GPU are not great for heavy tasks especially gaming, the screen is just good, the battery is just ok, the charging is slow (even with a 20W charger bought separately as there is none in the box), and the fingerprint sensor would be acceptable in 2019, but in 2023 it is an embarrassment.
Coming from Motorola, LG, Xiaomi, and OnePlus phones, I felt quite disappointed for a while. "A recently launched Google flagship will only be rivaled by a Samsung or Apple flagship, right?". Absolutely wrong, my 4-year-old OnePlus 7T outperforms the Pixel in almost every way. Gaming or watching movies on the 7T bigger screen with a better screen-to-body ratio was WAY better. The main cameras are comparable spec-by-spec, but the 7T ultra-wide is quite wider and it has a telephoto camera (inexistent in the non-pro Pixel), Google just has the upper hand on software processing.
Then 2 features made my disappointment fade a bit: IP68 protection is vital for riding a bike in the rain or kayaking, and the Magic Eraser is a fantastic addition to the already great camera software.
I also expect the price retention on the Pixel and system updates to be much better once I decide to resell it, but that's it.
It is a good phone, with (arguably) the best camera system, but there are dozens of better phones out there in the same (or lower) price range.
Apps run very smoothly and most importantly, it charges wirelessly. I only miss having media buttons on the side of the phone.
I purchased it mostly for the camera reviews, and not disapointed, photos are great.
The phone could be a bit more responsive, but there is always room for improvement im sure.
