I ordered the SIM on amazon so I could register it before I left. It didn't take long and you could do it once you arrive (and purchase at one of the many providers in the country at the airport or elsewhere) but I wanted to have it all ready as a 1st time user. I inserted the SIM card in my phone while in the airplane and it was seamless. *Make sure you store your original SIM card somewhere safe! You purchase a SIM that will last a certain # of days so make sure you don't activate it until the last minute. I was in the UK almost 3 weeks and tried to use WiFi whenever I could but still ended up using my data quite a lot. I got 15 GB total (some was provided free with an offer) and I had almost 5 GB & 2 days left on my plan when I left the UK. I was very happy with the quality, ease of use and price. My plan from Canada would've been cost prohibitive.

The card worked fine but the company uses sneaky tactics to automatically turn on a recurring subscription. On activation, I made double sure it was a one time charge as I only needed it for a week trip. A month later I got a bill for another month despite me selecting a one month only activation. After you activate you need to make sure to remove your CC info from you account file to be sure you won't be charged again.

If you do not meet the requirements for the plan, you may have to pay for each text, roam and call. You are best served if you live in the UK, and use your phone more in the UK than when you travel. It does seem like an interesting plan. Not good for someone from Canada travelling in the EU.

Use of a SIM card while roaming in the EU is subject to the EU roaming Policy which is based on this legal framework. Most UK providers are still using this policy, some have started charging for all use of their SIM cards outside the UK.
Using a goodybag in the EU (called inclusive EU roaming) depends on a number of things, including:
You must be a UK resident, or someone with a stable link to the UK (i.e. you live or work in the UK);
You must spend more time, and use your SIM more, in the UK than you do in the EU. This is checked over a rolling 4 month (124 day) reference period;
The Roaming status of your giffgaff account. This turns on and off automatically to indicate your eligibility to inclusive roaming.
If you are not eligible for inclusive EU roaming, you can still use your SIM if you Add credit to your account.
With an active (albeit non-working) goodybag + credit, you pay 3.2p/min, 1p/SMS and 0.36p/MB (about ⅓p (£3.60/GB))
Without an active goodybag, you would pay the standard UK rates.
