I used a solo gen 2 for almost 10 year, carried all around with my laptop, used it outside during the winter for long period of time and it is still running great 10 years after purchase. the knobs dont event feel loose or anything. Sturdy metal body, knob are smooth, precise and feel solid like it should. Same for the xlr and 1/4 connectors. Can be thrown in a back pack without worrying about anything it wont break. You'll need at least 2i2 if you want to resample in stereo or dual mono through the interface. The 2i2 is a way better and flexible choice for its 2 mic/inst inputs

After purchasing Scarlett 4i4 here is an honest review.
Sound quality, 5stars
the sound is very nice and really good for vocals!

Headphone, 3stars
Not impressed it lacks volume i had no problems with my cheap behringer for volume however the 4i4 needs to be cranked to hear it well even with DAW mix set low.

Latency 5stars
This is real good compared to what i had and also my cheap interface had a hiss this is dead quiet.

Control panel 3stars
This was easy to install but its really unnecessary IMO you really have to mess with it and the results are lack luster.

Seems well made dials and jacks are tight.

Extras plugins etc, 1 star
Dont be fooled by the add only two pligins are actually free from one site but not the red plugins from focusrite its a 30 day trial and you can only use it for like 30secs what a scam! I did not use the free DAW but if its anything like the rest of the supposedly free software you need to create many acounts etc its brutal and they are all trials, product engineers fail to remember we just want to get going and record we dont want sign up to 10 differnt things and mess with controller software thats pretty much useless.

I think its a tad over priced for what you get, if actually included the plugins free then its fair.

Would i recommend?
If you do all your recording with headphones this unit is not for you and also no controls for the general headphone mix output only a volume for the headphone jack.

I was using a $65 cheap behringer one channel and to be honest in some aspects it keeps up to this unit and that is a let down at that price point.

I probabaly wouldnt purchase again and probbaly try a differnt brand just to compare.

The shipping was supper fast arriving one day early.

Hope this helps the average joe like me with home recording equipment.

Bought this for my brother on an amazon warehouse deal that was a great price. He uses it for his headphones and connecting his guitar to the pc.

No more complaints from our parents about him playing the guitar late at night because it goes straight to his headphones instead of a speaker!

He's also been able to record for his friends which he loves too.

Very decent latency, I did not expect that much performance out of small device like that.

I did not use it for recording yet but for playing live using virtual amp/preamp application on Windows 10. I am playing bass with AmpliTube 5, I set the buffer size to 515KB and it works very well. In case you are new to this kind of device, you should know that whatever you plug in, it will amplify your signal and then you can output that signal directly to monitor speakers. Then you may choose to go for the extra mile with virtual amp/preamp applications on your computer to process the sound further with the effects of your choice. For my personal application, it allows me to postpone the purchase of a dedicated bass/guitar amp, my sound system sounds good enough to be use for monitoring while I practice on my bass (Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2 + Klipsch R-120SW 12" Subwoofer). I am not pretending that my setup should replace a dedicated bass/guitar amp but if you have a decent sound system, then having this audio interface might be worth your time.

Build quality is great, casing and controls are well made. The included DAW and other apps are just making this audio interface an ever better offer.

I which the smallest unit would have also have in option the possibility to have digital input/output.
