Great for first time users; pedometer is questionable; band may cause irritation
4 Stars
Great for first time users; pedometer is questionable; band may cause irritation
SUMMARY: I purchased this model of Fitbit (on Black Friday sale for $90) specifically because I want something basic (i.e. no phone functionality) that measures my heart rate, calories in/out, and reminds me to keep moving. This does that with a few added extras, such as sleep quality, swimming, and exercise intensity (AKA "Zone Minutes") which is based on heart rate and time spent moving. While the measurements seem relatively accurate, the pedometer is WAY off, as is the heart rate tracker (see "Cons") and cannot be trusted! I also started developing a rash after 2-3 weeks of daily wear, even though I take it off for showers/baths and clean the strap regularly. In my opinion, this is perfect for my needs as a casual/first-time Fitbit user, but would not be suitable for those who want a more detailed fitness experience. There are also several other cheaper items on the market that can do pretty much everything this one does -- I only got this because I wanted to see what that year-long free "Premium" membership included.------ PROS ------+ Measures weight, heart rate, estimated calories in/out, activity time, and sleep quality. It can also measure swimming! (At the time of writing, I am in a lockdown, so I cannot speak to how well that works yet.) For the most part, these readings seem accurate, but obviously, you need to take the calories-burned estimate with a grain of salt -- and that pedometer is *very* questionable (see "CONS").+ Comes with a year's free subscription to Fitbit -- this is $13-14/month after the year is up, so don't forget to cancel if you don't want it!+ The [premium] app allows you to log the following: exercise, weight over time, sleep quality, menstrual cycle, water, food, steps, and provides health tips and daily health summaries+ You can add exercise to the app *after* you have done it; the Fitbit will notice that your heart rate was up for a set amount of time and estimate when you started exercising and how long for. Then, all you have to do is confirm the time and type of workout, which gives you a calories-burned estimate. EXAMPLE: I logged 30 mins of cardio today and it estimated a burn of about 220 kcals.+ Exercise is considered in "Zone Minutes"; you get credited *more* Zone Minutes for how intense your workout was (i.e. how elevated your heart rate was and for how long). My 30 min workout was credited as 37 zone minutes because of the intensity. I think this is an interesting concept and definitely gives you a feeling of having been active!+ Small and sleek. I specifically did not want something large and bulky, so the small screen on this product works well for me. It is relatively easy to scroll through, too.+ Multiple watch faces/styles to choose from.+ If you *do* care about phone notifications, there is a very basic function that allows you to see how many notifications you have+ Battery drains at about 10% per day, which translates to 7-10 days between charges; however, on my first run-through, I got over two weeks out of it before I needed to charge it.+ Comfortable (at first! see CONS)------ CONS ------- The pedometer is not a real pedometer. I live in a 425 sq. ft bachelor and my work-from-home day usually consists of a measly 200-300 steps around the apartment. The Fitbit logs me as having taken nearly 3000-4000 steps on an average day -- over a mile! This is not remotely correct. The reason for all of these extra steps is the Fitbit counts my daily workouts as a couple of thousand steps. (NOTE: Even if you do not take a lot of steps during a workout, your elevated heart rate over time adds to your overall steps on the Fitbit. I.e. I got several hundred steps added to my day with a 30-minute mat workout, which consisted of bodyweight exercises such as crunches and pushups -- it wasn't a run). While it's encouraging to see the Fitbit thinking I am more active than I am, I am really pretty sedentary and do not walk very far during the day, so this pedometer is not accurate in terms of actual steps you take.- The heart rate monitor isn't always accurate. I can be doing cardio + weights (i.e. a Kettlebell workout) and having a heart attack, but the Fitbit will measure my heart rate as 80 bpm. This is not correct at all: my actual heartrate is often 140-170 when doing these exercises (I've checked!). I think the Fitbit's ability to properly read my heart rate *may* be affected by sweatiness, which obviously varies depending on the workout intensity. I don't know. Either way, the heart rate monitor is not always accurate and it's annoying to see my very intense workout being downplayed (i.e. less active zone minutes; fewer calories burned) because my very raised heart rate is being recorded as lower than it actually is.- In my opinion, this model should be cheaper given it is a few years old and there are lots of fitness watches on the market that can do everything this can. bought it on Black Friday because I do not think this is worth the current list price (about $130); however, I wanted to see what a free year of the premium membership got me in terms of measurements/health reports *and* this item claims to be waterproof for swimming, which not every other competitive product can claim.- After 2-3 weeks of wearing the watch pretty consistently (I remove it for showers and baths so I can clean my skin underneath!), I started getting irritation on my wrist and a rash developed which looks weirdly like a burn of some sort. I took the photo attached to this review some 5 hours after removing the Fitbit and the rash is still pretty obvious. I have sensitive skin, so this may be an issue for other users, too.

I've had this for 5 weeks now and have used it every day.

The good:
I like the small form factor. It's easy to get aftermarket accessories for it that are good at reasonable prices. I liked the original band and would probably use it if I swam regularly. It is really easy to change bands, no tools required. As long as you stay within the limits of the technology, it's accurate enough for me. Once you get to know the menu setup and navigation style, it's quite easy to navigate through it. The battery lasts me about a week on a charge. Having this tool makes me more likely to be more active and it's great that I can review my past tracking history. The Android app works well.

The not so great:
The screen is plastic so it scratches really easily. I use a screen protector film on it all the time now and a screen protector case over it also on most days. Wearing it on my wrist, it doesn't count steps accurately so I always loose about 20-30% of them. When I'm walking a lot I slip the tracker onto my leg just above my ankle, under my sock, with the band left on. Its small size makes this easy and my step count is much more accurate. The sleep sensing must be done using heart rate and motion and it has happened a couple of times that when I'm on the computer for a couple of hours with a low heart rate and not moving my arm much it thinks I'm asleep. I can delete that record for about a day afterwards, but after that it seems permanent. I did try the windows app on my computer while still having the Android app on my phone, but that caused issues and I only use the phone app now. I probably could have figured that out, but as long as I have the phone app working that's pretty much al I need.

Overall, I'm quite happy with it at its price point.

Bought the classic, black version of the Inspire 2 since I wanted a colour that goes with everything. This version of the Fitbit has a heart rate monitor that can be turned off, if you’re not a fan of the feature, which is a plus. The battery life lasts around 1.5 weeks with the heart rate monitor on.

It also has a “water lock” feature, which prevents the touchscreen from being selected while wet. Very useful for cleaning the device.
