Exo Terra's Desert Terrarium Sand is natural real desert sand with no added dyes or chemicals. The sand has been sifted to remove impurities and to obtain a homogenous sand grain size.

Works well for a hamster sand bath. I had tried kids play sand, but it was too coarse, and she ate it. So we tried reptile sand. It is a much softer, finer texture, and she immediately started digging and playing in it. Martha the hamster is a fan. It’s not too dusty, and it has no added chemicals, such as calcium, which are concerns for pets with sensitive respiratory systems.

A very fine sand that could be used for an hour glass. Great for mixing into soils for plants that require drainage and is not coarse and heavy for all of it to end up at the bottom of the planter. Also great for controlling fungus gnats by layering at least 1/2” of this sand on top of the soil. Once wet, the sand locks together with the water surface tension and feels solid but water drains through easily. There is no chance for gnats to go in or come out.

I use it for my hamster for a sand box. Hamsters love digging in sand and it helps with greasy fur. They also use it as a litter box which makes for easy clean up! Cheaper online then in stores too!

I don't usually like to write reviews, but I'm starting to when I got something to say.

When I start pouring it, immediately a constant smoke of dust rises in the air, and will make my nose stuffy.
Now, I don't know if it's such a problem when the sand is settled, of how much of it easily goes airborne to irritate the respiratory of small critters like hamsters, but nonetheless it's what I've observed.

Overall it's good, it's sand, but I would buy the reptisand brand instead as I haven't noticed the same amount of dust smog at all.

I hope my hamster has no problem with it, but better safe than sorry, for next time I purchase.

------Edit Update---
been several months. my hamster is elderly, however, he has gotten eye infection, and his other eye got shut closed too right after I poured in this sand.

changed from 4 stars to 3 stars.
not recommended to take the risk with this dusty sand. please use another brand, and other reviewers saying it's not dusty aren't correct, or have different batch.
