I registered the sim card as suggested and inserted it when I arrived in Europe. Although my phone recognized the sim card, I was not able to use data or send messages. Any suggestions online did not work (resetting my phone, ensuring data and roaming were on) and the O2 website would not work either. I couldn't contact the customer service phone number, as I was not able to make outgoing calls.
After registering the sim card before travelling, I was asked to submit the dates for my travel and was ensured the card was ready to use.
Found a much cheaper and better option while in Europe, tried being proactive, but it's better to just get a sim card there.
