I had a pagewide before so I guess I was a little spoiled with speed. But that one had expensive cartridges. This one has a preset for scanning to one drive with only 3 touches.. awesome. Prints, scans and copies pretty fast. I print a lot during the day and this printer does the job very well. Noticeably slower when printing duplex or high quaility. Still plenty fast for printing 1-10 pages at a time. If you want anything faster, get a pagewide. Ink tank levels are visible, very smart feature. My only real complaint as that it is a little noisy when printing, but other than that 10/10. I would definitely buy again.

Brand-new office printer purchased on Black Friday. Set up halted due to printer complaining that there was a paper jam; this is BEFORE I even put any paper inside and right after toner was filled.
Called EPSON tech support and after spending 44 minutes on the phone with a few clueless people, I was told to send a picture of the ink levels, screen, proof of purchase, serial number so that someone 'may' contact me within a few days; hopefully 3 days or less!! EPSON tech support in Canada has 1.5 stars out of 5 (scale in this case does not matter, does it?)
Called Amazon to send a replacement to which they said you have to buy a new one and return this one (hi Amazon, if I wanted to do that I would go to my nearest BestBuy or electronics store, no?)
Buyer beware ... hope you never call EPSON support.

Replaced an HP 476 and was a bit worried it wouldn't be as good but it is. It's a smaller footprint and the ink savings will be susstantial. It's used in a home office situation on a daily basis. The scanner is excellent and the 2 sided printing is smooth and bug free - so far anyway.

1.0 out of 5 stars Free ink, not so free

I do a lot of printing. Free ink for Two Years sounds like a good deal, however not everything is as it seems. After sending in my first ten sets of bottles, all were rejected by the Rebate Center due to my serial numbers not being valid. How can this be I asked? After contacting EpsonUSA and having a mini meltdown over the rebate center and their claim rejections, I found that when you register your printer with Epson it isn't real time. Your registration is in a queue. So if your request for a rebate gets there beforehand you will be denied. Next thing is the rebate.is for two years, no it is for the warranty period of the printer or around 80,000 pages. I have had mine for a month and I am over 30000 pages, I am guessing that it won't be 2 years. Hum, didn't see that in the ad.
Oh, and when I was asked where I purchased the printer I told them the Epson Store on Amazon, to which their reply was that they do not have a store on Amazon. So, being the helpful sort I am I sent them a link to their store.
Overall the printer works well. Free ink, not so well, seems more like a scam than a perk. I am really disappointed in Epson, thought they could do better than that.

I loved this printer. It does everything well as long as you give it high quality paper.
BUT at 2 years and 6 months after purchase, it now has a mechanical failure that causes it to think that there is a paper jam when there isn't. And as long as it thinks there is a paper jam, it won't let you print or do anything else. I tried canned air sprayed inside, and I would use the Clean Pass sheets, but it won't pull them through bc it thinks there is a paper jam. =( And there is no one who repairs them within a 200 mile radius of me. SO GET THE EXTENDED WARRANTY cause AFTER 2 years is when it is going to break

I ordered an Epson ET-5850 from Amazon on 1/27/2023 and it arrived on 1/28/2023. After several tests, I determined on 1/28/2023 that the printer rendered “banding” on all standard quality print outs on any paper thicker than normal copy paper. I worked with Epson tech support for two days to troubleshoot on Monday 1/30/2023 and Tuesday 1/31/2023. The tech and I, of course, went through the prescribed print alignment and print quality adjustments, but to no avail.
The Epson representative determined that the printer was experiencing “hardware failure” and put the order in to send out another printer to me. The replacement printer arrived on 2/2/2023 at approximately 5:15pm.
I unboxed the replacement printer and noticed that it was black instead of white like the original printer. Additionally, the model number for the replacement was ET-5850U. I thought nothing of that difference as I assumed Epson had sent me a comparable printer as a replacement. I then boxed up the defective printer and applied the return label to the package.
Next, I set up the replacement printer and charged the ink as directed. After all was completed, I received an error message of 950143 from the printer (replacement printer). The error message indicated there was a problem with the “ReadyPrint” account which I don’t have and don’t want. I determined I had been sent the wrong printer as a replacement. Basically, I received an ET-5850U instead of an ET-5850. At that point in the evening, Epson representatives had gone home. I had to wait until the next to call back. The next day I spent two hours on the phone waiting on the representative to clear with management that they in fact had sent me the wrong replacement printer. So, I had to use the same return label (printed twice) to send back both printers. Keep in mind that this printer is big and especially awkward when it is boxed. I had to lug both printers to FedEx drop offs.

Eventually, on February 6, 2023 I received yet another ET-5850, but this one was refurbished. I paid for a new printer obviously, but after all of my drama I got a refurbished printer. I was assured by the tech that it was refurbished to meet Epson quality standards. I'm not sure what that means any more. After using the printer for a week (New-New-Not so new printer), I have determined that the printer still prints the lines and bands at standard quality on paper thicker than standard copy paper. Yes, I put the paper in the appropriate cassettes. Cassette 2 is for standard paper only, whereas cassette 1 and the back loaded paper tray is for other types of media.

What I have determined in summary...

->The ET-5850 doesn't print well on card stock or envelopes at standard quality. Granted those problems (banding and lines) go away at the High quality setting.

Q: Why not print at high quality for those type of media?

A: I suppose I'll have to now. The selling point for me for the ET-5850 was the ink savings and speedy pages-per-minute. At high quality, the speed reduces considerably. This makes a big difference when you're printing offering envelopes or custom raffle tickets by the thousands. Additionally, how much more ink am I using at high quality? This could negate the ink consumption savings. I haven't had the pinter long enough to speak on that.

-> The quality of the ET-5850 is good on standard copy paper and good at the *high* quality setting when printing on cardstock.

-> Printer can be very fussy about paper mismatches. I can live with this, but it is annoying.

-> When printing about 150 envelopes (#6 3/4 envelopes not the usual #10) the software often assumed I had a paper jam when I had only run out of envelopes in the cassette. It often misinterpreted a lack of envelopes as a jam. The only way I was able to clear that paper jam message was to load more envelopes (of course) and pull the back compartment out and push the back compartment back in to trick the software into thinking I had cleared a non-existent paper jam. If you don't do that, the OK button does not appear on the screen to continue, and your only alternative would be to cancel the entire print job and run back to your computer to resend it. This is fine if you're not printing hundreds of things.

->From time to time when envelopes got low, the paper grabber would grab the envelope and mishandle it which led to actual jams in that case.

-> I did a side-by-side comparison of speed versus the HP 9025e (approx $400) which I purchased directly from HP. It was sad how much faster the HP printed than the ET-5850. Granted, the Epson was set to high quality, so it wouldn't ruin my printouts with the aforementioned banding. The print quality for the Epson at high quality versus the HP at standard quality is almost identical with the Epson getting the slight edge. The Epson should win in a high quality versus standard quality matchup, right?

->If you do "everyday" type of printouts then you might be okay with the ET-5850.

->If you do advanced work with cardstock or envelopes, then you'd be better off going with something way cheaper. The actual price point for this printer should be around $600, in my opinion

-> The manufacturing of the ET-5850 could use some improvement. The software should be more user-friendly.

-> The ink filling process is simple and clean. Epson got that part right.

I settled on buying this printer for three reasons.
1. Ink Tank savings
2 Advertised pages-per-minute speed
3. My great experience with an Epson photo printer: XP-15000 (Absolutely fantastic - but that would require another review).

Overall, I'm underwhelmed and disappointed with the ET-5850, but I will try to make the best of it. In hindsight, I may have been better off just sending the printer back to Amazon and saving myself the trouble with the Epson process.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great, printer
Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2020

There are things I really like about this printer, and there are things that are very problematic. I'm writing this review after using this printer for less than a week and with a few thousand pages under my belt.

First, some things that I really like about this printer:
1. The print speed is acceptable. It's sufficiently fast when compared to consumer grade inkjet printers. It's not the fastest printer, but it doesn't choke on text pages. Print speed will slow on graphics heavy pages with significant coverage, as expected.
2. The ink is reasonably priced and provides acceptable quality for printing. Most of my prints are text-heavy and the text is clear and readable.
3. Multiple paper trays allow for flexibility in paper type.

Things that are aggravating, but not show stoppers:
1. This thing is noisy. You won't want to keep it in your office.
2. The printer used a ton of ink during priming. More than half of each of the color tanks and a full third of the black. The good news is that the box came with two bottles of each ink color. The maintenance box also shows half of the serviceable life used before I printed a single page.
3. I seem to have to turn the printer off and back on again for my computer to find it every morning. Not sure if this is an issue with my network, but none of my other printers or devices have this issue.

Things that are dissatisfying to me and might make me not recommend this printer:
1. Frequent paper jams, especially when paper is low or when the printer switches between the paper trays. This is really frustrating.
2. Large print jobs will often have issues. I often print a 260 page document (training material). It's double-sided so it runs 130 pieces of paper printed on both sides. I have yet to print this document on this printer without it jamming. The printer recovers well and prints from where it left off, but it has NEVER made it through without an issue. I have used several brands of quality paper with the exact same results. The jams are usually when paper is low or when transitioning between paper trays, but not always.

Overall, I'm mixed. There are things that I really like and things that I don't. At this price point, I expected more. I'll update my review in a few more weeks as things progress.

Update - April 2021. I would give this a solid 3.5 stars, close to 4, after using this for a while now. One of my big frustrations was that I couldn't print a training manual (the most common big job I print) without it jamming at some point in the process. I can mostly do this without issue now, so long as I don't have to switch between paper trays. I'm now accustomed to printing my manual one at a time and making sure the paper is topped off. This has reduced my issues, but is still really annoying.

Also, I am impressed with the ink. The quality is satisfactory and it has kept my print costs low, especially when compared to the print suppliers I was using previously. That said, keep spare ink and a spare maintenance box on site if you plan on doing higher volume printing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Epson ET-5850 Wonderful for my Small Business
Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2021

I highly recommend the ET-5850 and would definitely purchase this printer again (but hopefully won't have to for at least 5 years!)
PROS: My documents must be professional quality when I send them to the Judge and my Epson ET-5850 gives excellent quality documents. I did not give any stars to tech support because I haven't needed tech support - set-up instructions were straight-forward and simple and use is just as easy, and I am not a tech-savvy person. NOTE: Be sure to download the Epson Smart-Scan for easy scanning. I tried to scan some other way and it was frustrating, until I read more instructions. Ah ha! now scanning is a mouse-click away.
ANSWERS TO CRITICS: I was worried by a few reviews such as "almost all the ink was used by set-up". MY ANSWER: the description in Amazon says more ink will be used in set-up than on a daily basis and its true. I was left with at least 1/2 the ink after set-up. However, after approx 40 days, my daily use barley made a dent in the remaining ink levels, which are easy to see on the ink-level panel on the front of the machine. My machine came with a full extra round of ink bottles so I'm good for quite a while. Further, the price of the ink bottles is less $ than the cartridges for my old Epson WorkForce3640. Another concern a reviewer had was the "noise" during printing. MY ANSWER: The ET 5850 is not any louder than other printers I had and is quieter than laser printers I've worked with. Also not messy like some laser printers. People also were concerned about the cost. MY ANSWER: 1) the ET-5850 is a high quality printer; 2) In 40 days, I've already saved the cost of 1 set of ink cartridges (at a cost of about $70 monthly) as I had no need to replace ink; 3) This is not a disposable printer but is a solid piece of office equipment I expect to have for a few years.
CONS OR DOWNSIDE(S): There is a delay between when I hit print and when the printer begins printing, enough so that I wonder if the ET-5850 received my print request - then the printing begins. Also, the printing is slower than expected. I saw on the box this is an "ultra-high-speed" printer. hmm, not so much. I may check my instructions again to see if I can speed things up. OVERALL: I am quite pleased I spent the extra money and got a quality product with expected savings of time and money from fewer trips to the office supply store.
