After using the Echo Show 5 (3rd Generation), I upgraded to the Echo Show 8 Gen 2, and it’s been a fantastic decision. My primary uses include watching videos and connecting to my Ring doorbell, and the larger screen size and improved features make it feel like a mini smart TV on my desk.

Standout Features and Upgrades:

Top-Notch Camera: The 13MP camera is a major step up from older models. It delivers superb video quality, especially in low light, and the auto-framing feature keeps me centered during video calls.

Remote Monitoring: The ability to use the Echo Show 8 as a security camera is invaluable. I can check on my Amazon deliveries and monitor my front door remotely.

Broader View: The new wide-angle lens offers a much wider field of view, which is perfect for keeping an eye on my pets and monitoring different areas of my home.

Enhanced Speed: The faster processor is noticeable. The Echo Show 8 Gen 2 responds quicker, making my interactions smooth and efficient.

Energy Efficiency: I appreciate the device powering down when not in use to save energy.

Versatile Streaming: I enjoy streaming Amazon Prime, Netflix, and YouTube. The screen size is perfect for my computer desk, giving me a compact smart TV experience.

Eco-Friendly: Knowing the Echo Show 8 is made from recycled materials is a nice bonus, supporting sustainability.

Room for Improvement:

Audio Connection: While Bluetooth is great, I do miss having a 3.5mm audio jack for wired connections.

Good Product with Some Things to Know

I purchased this along with an Echo Show 5 and between the two, this is my preferred device. We use this device in the kitchen as it is the hub of the house. It is linked to our Blink doorbell and camera system, as well as my Apple Music account and there are things I like, and things I don't. The sound quality is very good, a bit on the low end, heavy side - but there are sliders for Treble, Midrange and Bass to adjust. It packs a punch for the size. Both Apple Music and Amazon Music apps have a setting to turn on Sound Check, the feature that equalizes the volume for songs so there are no loud or quiet songs in the mix, however this setting does not translate to when you ask Alexa to play music. You get loud and quiet songs, which is annoying. Using it as a Bluetooth speaker resolves this, but then defeats the purpose of the device. Voice recognition is good as is the screen quality. Setup was a bit of a pain, when I purchased it, I selected link to my Amazon account, and it came linked, but it was acting really weird. I did a factory reset and it seemed to behave better. The home screen content that cycles through seems quite static, I am seeing the recommendations for the same Skills, Recently Played music, etc that I did when I first got it and set it up about 3 weeks ago. Would be nice to have the content refresh daily. It integrates well with my Blink camera system and compatible smart devices - it is nice to say turn off / on living room lights and have it happen almost instantly. I think overall I had higher expectations of what to expect, and while not entirely meeting those expectations, I have come to use this pretty much on a daily basis. Would recommend.
