This is just what I needed to play my old shows to my (new to me) 70s floor model TV. My DVD/VCR combo connects to it, as well as an external hard drive so I can play files through USB.
Arrived quickly. It does work. Easy to set up. But you get what you pay for. Picture is grainy at times. Never has program info and what up with the low sound. Poor sound quality
This nis my second converter box in 4 years. My old one finally gave up but after 4 years and at the price, I could not complain. It served me well. So, I ordered a replacement. Absolutely thrilled yet again. Straight out of the box, with two connections to make, it was up and running. I plugged in my thumb drive and all my recordings were there. It has new software and a new interface which is an improvement. It set up my channels automatically and the remote is also improved. This is a great product that makes OTA viewing and recording programs a breeze.

4.0 out of 5 starsEmatic Digital TV Converter Box with Recording, Review & Troubleshooting

This is the second recording digital converter I tried. It's pretty similar to the first one, but this one does seem to work better. I recently decided to "cut the cable" and ditched my cable subscription. My TV set is from around 1996, which means according to government mandate from way back, without a converter, I get no channels. So I had a Old RCA digital converter I bought back when the law went into effect. It worked great, the channels seemed to come in clearly and the guide was easy to use and the listings on the screen were easy to see. However, it did not record and VCRs are a thing of the past. Thus began the search for something that would record and I found these things. When you use the electronic program guide it does show you the program listings for the next several hours. But sitting on my couch which is not that far away I need to get up and walk closer if I want to really read the programs listed. It doesn't seem to process the signal as well as the old RCA, but it seems if I turn it off when I'm done watching TV unless I want to record something it works better the next time. It's easy to flip through the on screen program guide. It's easy to have it scan for available channels. Moving your antenna may help you get more channels. The remote is pretty easy to figure out and works well. It does a good job of recording the shows, and I like being able to fast forward through the commercials like I could on a recorded cable show. I've had it maybe a month, so can't speak to it's longevity. Biggest complaint, size of the onscreen program guide. Trouble shooting tips: I wanted to record with it, so I bought a 128 GB USB thumb drive. Formatted it on my computer to many different formats, every time I would hit the USB button, or access it through the menu, it wouldn't find it, no matter which format I used. I tried a 64 GB thumb drive, no luck, no matter the format on it either. I also noticed when I had the USB plugged in the remote was unbearably laggy and almost unresponsive at times. So obviously I couldn't record a dang thing. All these problems can be solved for around $25.00, IF and only IF you need an indoor antenna amplifier. If you don't, you can solve it for $10. By adding a 4 port USB hub I solved the laggy remote when the USB was plugged in. With the hub plugged into the front and the USB plugged into the hub the remote responds just fine and the converter can find the 128 GB thumb drive. I have NO idea why this matters. But it seemed the people using a external HD didn't have the problem and the only difference I could think of was that the HD doesn't directly plug in like a USB drive does. The USB hub solves that. It doesn't have to be a four port, but it was an experiment and I figured if I didn't use it for that, I'd use it for a computer. It records great. To find the shows when you access the USB drive mine shows two folders, one is system vol information. Ignore that and click on the other one, it will open and list the shows you've recorded. After you've watched the show and want to delete it, highlight it, press the EPG button, then hit the large "OK" button on the remote. Twice. And automagically it's gone. The indoor amplifier helped with the reception, still not as good as the old RCA box, but quite acceptable and it records. It's a good box, and once I figured out how to solve some of the problems I'm really enjoying it. Hopefully this will help and save others some of the frustration I had.
