Got off the pill in August, and started trying in October. Had nooo idea what my cycle was, as it was still quite irregular after coming off the pill. Being 34, I didn't want to spend a bunch of time messing around and trying to figure it out on my own, so I bought these. A bit expensive, but I wanted something very straightforward (smiley, or no smiley) that required no guesswork. I started using them on Day 10 of my cycle, and didn't get a smiley until Day 23. My husband and I did the deed that day and the next day. Exactly two weeks later I found out I was pregnant! We were extremely shocked since it was our first month trying. I read all of the reviews from people who got pregnant right away, but I was like "there's no way that will be me, that's got to be a fluke". Yet here we are! I had no issues at all with error messages, I found them very easy to use. Worth every penny if you ask me. It's really nice to feel like you at least have control over some part of the process, since there is so much about our bodies we can't control. These sticks did an excellent job picking up my LH surge. If they don't work for you, it could be because your levels of LH during the surge are a smidge below what this test picks up on, so try a more sensitive test. These tests blew me away, such an amazing tool to use when trying to get pregnant!
Edit: Unfortunately that first pregnancy didn't stick, but I continued to use the sticks and got pregnant again two months later, doing it the day of the smiley and the day after. These things are great!
