4.0 out of 5 stars Price can't be beat, but might need some work

I decided to purchase the 1/4 size cello package for my six year old daughter when I discovered that it was going to cost the same price to buy it as it would for me to rent a cello for a year locally. Since her teacher thought she was on the borderline between an eighth and quarter size instrument, I figured the cello would last her at least a couple years for the same price. I also figured that given my daughter is a beginner and that no starting string players have great tone, that the quality of the sound wouldn't make a big difference. As it turns out, the tone of the instrument is quite fine.

What I hadn't anticipated was that the instrument may have other challenges... in our case, the strings were positioned so far up above the fingerboard, that even as an adult, I had difficulty pushing the string down enough to touch the fingerboard so that it makes a nice tone. I discussed this with the cello teacher, and we came up with a solution, which was to use a tiny file to file down the grooves at the top of the fingerboard enough to bring the strings lower. Additionally, the bridge wasn't very shaped, so that when she played one of the middle strings it was hard not to play another. I fixed this by putting a little piece of leather under the center strings where they meet the bridge - a common musician trick. Finally, the tuning pegs were slipping a lot so I applied some of the stuff that helps them stick better. With these amendments, the cello works just fine, and the price of the package couldn't be beat. I suspect however if I hadn't been a string player myself it may have been hard to know how to make the improvements.

Incidentally, the lines at the edge of the instrument are painted on (usually inlayed in a higher quality instrument), and the black fingerboard is painted black not ebony, however these are things I don't really care about in a short-term use beginner kids instrument. The bow is made of good materials and is solid, though a little rough at the frog. Comparing it to other kids instruments of the same size as school, I'd say it runs on the large size. I probably wouldn't have gotten a stand normally, but it came with the package and I have to say I love it - adds a feeling of safety to storing the instrument in a busy room with kids running in and out. I'm rating this a four since I probably would purchase it again, but might also consider the next level up next time.

5.0 out of 5 stars very nice

I'm a professional cellist. I got tired of fighting off my 3-year-old trying to play my cello while I practice so I got him his own. This is the least expensive option I can find. I like that it comes as a set with the bow, case, and stand, along with some other accessories. If you're not familiar with the cello, be prepared to go to a luthier or professional cellist to set up the cello upon receipt because the bridge was packed separately in the case. The cello and bow are both solid. The stand works well. The only thing is I wish the bow came pre-rosined like when you get your bow re-haired because new rosin and new hair is just a terrible combination and it takes forever to put enough on the hair for it to make a sound. But I'm a satisfied customer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners

I started playing cello when I was 4 and am now teaching my 5 year old how to play. I was planning to rent a cello for her from a local shop but found this one for roughly the cost of 9 months of the rental.

It does sound like a tissue box with rubber bands wrapped around it, but honestly, for a kids cello, who cares and which ones don't?

It's sturdy, the accessories are good and it looks ok. It seems to hold it's tune pretty well which is a big plus for me! I would recommend it for any beginner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't get a more reasonably priced and playable instrument for my 5YO

Bought this cello for my 5 YO son, who began lessons 2 months ago. We had originally bought the Grace Cello available via Amazon for $200, but that cello was HORRIBLE (very cheap, looks like particle board, plastic flimsy fine tuners, etc.), so I wasn't holding my breath on this Cecilio Cello. When it arrived, we were very impressed. It was definitely made of real wood (unlike the Grace Cello) and the tuners and fine tuners were great. The Cello kept it's tune well, and, because it didn't cost me an arm and a leg, I let my son play it whenever he want. Unfortunately, he was careless with it today and accidentally let it drop (while he was practicing) onto the hardwood floor. The neck cracked almost completely off the body of the Cello (at the junction b/w neck and body). When I talked to his Cello teacher about it, he told me we should order another one: it's not a high-end instrument, but it has a decent sound for a beginner cellist, particularly one in elementary school. And, hey, it doesn't cost an arm and a leg, which is a wonderful thing when you have to worry about it breaking each time your child plays it on his/her own. We are going to use wood glue and a fastener and rig the broken Cello for my son to use without supervision; the new cello, we will keep in a safe place for 'official' practice (with an adult) and performance only.

4.0 out of 5 stars doesn't come with the bridge on the cello

first, it doesn't come with the bridge on the cello, which is a minor problem, but the worst,it doesn't contain a tuner with it, so i had a problem with that. Also the rosin is not to good either, I had to rosin for 1 or 2 days for it to work, for it to work we had to by new rosin for the bow. Over all it's a pretty good pack except for the 3 problems. Bridge, tuner, and rosin.
