camera arrived in perfect condition and is taking very detailed images and excellent video. I am using this R camera with the canon RF-EF adapter and my EF 16-35mm F2.8 III L lens. I looked on youtube for help with the setup as this camera has so many menus to customize it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Expensive but awesome

The elephant in the room is the cost and video issues. I don't do video so I don't care about that aspect and Canon has fixed some of the issues with the latest firmware releases. As for the cost, there is no getting around it. For those able/willing to accept it, you will be getting a great camera. I was an old DSLR snob for the longest time but I haven't touched my DSLRs since I got this. I primarily shoot wildlife (birds) and landscape images. The shots I get with the R5 are incredible. I opted for the R5 over the R6 knowing that I would occasionally need to crop in for some bird images. I am able to maintain quality when cropping.

The eye detection is truly amazing. I am continually surprised at how well the camera detects the birds from great distances through brush and busy backgrounds. That being said, there are times where I will revert to spot focusing since the camera will sometimes miss eye focus. The autofocus is also great for locking onto birds in flight. As a long time hobbyist, I could never hope to focus quick enough. The R5 eye detection allows me to capture images I would normally not get.

I also use the camera to take pictures of my son's soccer games. I can track player movement, focus on specific players in a group, capture fast moving sequences. At 12 fps in mechanical mode, I am able to stop action with ease. I did use electronic shutter and it is smooth like butter. You are essentially taking a very fast stop action video. The problem is that you don't realize how many pictures you are capturing when you hold down the shutter button. You can fill a card pretty quickly in electronic mode. I only shoot to the SD card slot and have never filled the buffer during a game.

Again, this is an expensive camera but it is worth the price tag for my uses. Great image quality. Incredible eye detection autofocus. Good image quality at high ISO (not a lot of noise). Ability to use my old EF lenses with an adapter with no loss in image quality or autofocus speeds. I have used the R5 with RF lenses and they do add another level of quality and decrease weight. I am just not ready to sell all my old EF lenses to invest in a pure RF system.

First--I never have and never will shoot video with a hand-held camera so this review is just for the photography side not the video side of the camera. I consider myself an advanced amatuer having spent 40 years in photography. I cannot say enough good things about the R5--I got it with the RF 24-105 f4L lens. I also got the Canon adaptor and have used the adaptor on all my lenses (Tamron, Sigma, Rokinon and Canon--all EF) and they all work flawlessly--in some cases better than on my 6DMII I upgraded from. Auto focus is amazing--the eye AF is magic--on occassion. it locks on as advertised and works great on all birds (even hummingbirds) and animals--occassionally it may lock on something that looks like an eye (a zebra's nose in my case) but 99% of the time it is amazing. low light is tops--I would have never dreamed of taking photos at 2000, 3000, 10000 or even 20000 iso in the past but with this camera even at 20,000 the detail is great and the noise is minimal. buttons are all programable and right where I want them--easy to set up. The in body image stabilizer is really nice. I have found that I can take hand held up to 1/2 or 3/4 second--not all photos turn out perfect but with practice I am getting every other one in sharp detail. This is my first mirrorless camera--the ability to see the shot through the viewfinder as it will be captured is a game-changer. The battery life is good--not as good as my 6DII but the good news is the batteries from that camera work in the R5 so I have 6 good batteries. I am still getting 300-1000 photos depending on what I am shooting. And at 20fps, with eye tracking virtually every photo of a flying bird is in perfect focus--larger files so plan on more storage. I am amazed and would buy it again

5.0 out of 5 stars I think this is the first camera that will actually pay for itself
Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2021

Wow! I had a 5d mark iv, which I loved. During the first day of owning the R5 mirrorless I thought everything was strange. By the end of the week the camera was familiar and I was navigating it easily. It has now been one month and for fun I went back to the 5d mark iv today to see if it was really that different. It was crazy, the 5d mark iv feels like an antique now.

Having access to the full sensor for autofocus points and animal af is way better than the old way of focusing. When animal af doesn't work the normal modes outperform too. The screen is brighter, the button layout is very intuitive (except video record on top, but you can always reassign buttons). The articulating screen is a much bigger advantage than I thought it'd be for landscapes, animals, and flowers. Silent electronic shutter is my new favorite mode; no more scaring animals or feeling annoying in quiet places such as arboretums. Self video recording is so much easier with people eye af, r5 stayed locked on eye the whole time.

Some of the negatives I have are it took awhile to get used to the electronic viewfinder. The viewfinder seems to lag a bit and can be hard to view in lowlight. The main lcd display only turns off when you look through the viewfinder or if the articulating screen is turned around. Itd be nice if there was just an on/off button for it. Battery life isn't as good, but I can still walk around for 4hrs occasionally using the camera and be fine (5d mark iv batteries work).

I have 1 rf lens and a 1 ef-rf adapter for all my ef lenses. The ef lenses perform amazingly and it is nice to have some IBIS for the non is lenses.

This camera is so close to being perfect, and is clearly the best available right now. You can really tell that the cameras coming in the future are going to be phenomenal. If I was just starting out in photography I can not think of a better camera to own. For professionals the full sensor autofocus, extra customizations, and electronic viewfinder will be big bonuses over other bodies; allowing you to be more precise and effective.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent camera for details
Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2021

I wish I could give this camera more than 5 stars--it's been fantastic. I am a birdwatcher and have always enjoyed photographing nature, so a few years ago I started out with a Canon SX70. I've used that for several years (and am still using it) but recently wanted something that would capture more detail such as feather structures, etc. I have also become interested in spiders and macro photography. So while I'm not a professional photographer, I wanted a better camera as I was pushing the SX70 as far as it would go, especially in low light conditions where I found it had chromatic abberations at times.

Enter the Canon EOS R5. I've only had the camera for a month and am still working with it to find the best settings for what I do, but the quality of the photos is amazing (especially considering that I'm not a great photographer and have no real idea what I'm doing). It is so worth the money. I've move the focus to the back buttons (I highly recommend this and watching the youtube videos by Brent Hall for the most important settings for wildlife photography) because I've found that while I set the focus to use animal eye detection, I use spot focus more than animal eye because I'm often photographing small birds in challenging situations such as swamp/forest or marshlands. In those situations, the animal eye focus often focuses on the twigs or reeds instead of on the bird. So I set up the * button for animal eye focus and left the AF ON button for spot focus while the shutter button simply meters and takes a photo. Oddly enough, what I find is that I use the animal eye focus to find the bird amidst the reeds or twigs and then use the spot focus to actually focus on the bird while I take the photo. It sounds weird, but it works for me and wouldn't work if I had left the focus on the shutter button.

The point is that I have three custom modes and set up C1 with the settings that work for me, as well as setting up the back button focus, which means I can get some amazing shots. Just the other day, I was in the marsh and caught a brief glimpse of a common yellowthroat. I used the back button spot focus and thought for sure that I would only have a blurred photo of the bird before it flitted away, but when I looked, the bird was perfectly in focus.

The camera and especially the lenses are much, much heavier than my old SX70 and it can be a little unweildy, but it has given me the extra resolution and detail that I sorely needed. I am also happy to have less/no chromatic aberrations. So far, I've been using solely Canon lenses and they've all worked very well. I am extremely pleased to have a camera now that I can "grow in to." I've also been interested in astrophography and the R5 is also capable of that, so I have additional uses for it as well as nature photography.

It is an extremely versatile and well-built camera. It's solid and is definitely the way to go when taking a step up from other less powerful cameras.

5.0 out of 5 stars Huge upgrade from 5D Mark II

Nothing but good things to say about this R5 and the new RF lenses so far. My kit was dated with everything over 10 years old. I didn't see a good reason to upgrade and make the transition to newer lenses or bodies until R5 and more RF lenses started to show up later in 2020. Having transitioned, I can say the R5 with the RF lenses performs extremely well.

If you are coming from older gear as I was (5D Mark II, lenses from 10+ years ago) the first most obvious improvement is with AF performance. The percentage of keeper images I get is significantly higher with the R5. A few AF settings customizations and the AF is almost too good to believe at times. It just works and almost always does what you want it to. It's easy to customize quick button or dial changes between AF modes for different situations with the R5. After just a few shoots and customized settings I felt I had total control of everything for any quick situation change.

Image quality is great but that's expected. Dynamic range and low-light performance probably aren't the best in the world at 45 megapixels on the Canon sensor, but it is improved over older Canon generations. I like the balance of higher pixel count/detail/sharpness and low-light performance. It's perfect for my use case.

Battery life isn't great. But with a battery grip and two of the newer batteries, I haven't managed to need to swap batteries during a long day shooting/hiking/birding/landscaping hundreds of images etc.

If it overheats on you, it means you should have bought an 8K video camera with a built in cooling fan. You are doing it wrong. The R5 is one of the world's best stills cameras for stills photographers that can also shoot some pretty video. And boy is it pretty if you know how to use it!
