I fully expected it to take batteries as I owed “3” of the smaller ones (I lost them during my move. And sure enough right after I bought this new one. I finally found my other ones) but I decided to keep the new P TOUCH because the cost of the tape was the equivalent of getting a new one pretty much.
The machine is light, the A button is not positioned good. You keep hitting S because it’s too far to the left to be comfortable to push while holding the machine.
I am aware you can shrink the distance between print labels but I could not locate this in the menu.
The battery compartment is a tad weird. It had 3 stacked on top of 3. Think it through before pushing your batteries in. It’s not hard. But it does take some though on how to place battery in without damaging the row of springs above it.
Overall. Easy to use. Lightweight. I didn’t care for a wire and honestly if you are using a handheld label maker why would you want a power cable and be tied to standing near an outlet to use???
The label cartridge that came with machine is a full size cartridge. I did buy extras non branded. It was easy enough to pop in the machine.

The Power Adapter Issue
I chose this particular label maker because despite the fact that it doesn't come with a plug-in power adaptor, it's at least available separately. But still. I really wish that a power cord could be included with this, because come on. Are you guys owned by Duracell? Did the presidents of Brother and Energizer decide while on a joint vacation to an island where rich people hunt poor people for sport (or 18 holes of golf) that it's just good business for anal-retentive label maker lovers to frantically haul backup batteries so they can label whenever the mood strikes?
The Excess Tape Problem.
Pro tip: Never print out one label at once. Make a list of at least 5 things you need labels for and do it in one go, because there's like a half inch of wasted tape before and after every label. Type out each label, hit the space bar like 10 times and then start typing out your next label, because even THAT wastes less tape than this label maker. And while label makers are not necessities and while you may not balk at the price of replacement tape because you're Mr. Moneybags it's still annoying to see that much tape going into the trash every single time.
My Final Thoughts
Okay, I complained a lot. But all things said, I love this label maker. I feel so fancy and organized. I like how it looks like a little typewriter, and I like how simple it is to use, and how many options it has. I use it for everything and it's fun.
It doesn't come with batteries, unfortunately and takes like 6 of them. The little triple A's. I'm not sure if it eats batteries or not, because the tape ran out first.
There is minimal tape included so you'll want to use it judiciously, although it's just $5 a cartridge online. The tape seems to be laminated with the black bits made from some plastic that gets heated off onto the sticky thing and then covered by clear plastic (inside the machine). It's not the thermal paper stuff that has bisphenols (apparently causes cancer) I think, so that's a plus.
Typing on the buttons wasn't great, since they're just stiffer tactile rubber remote buttons, and the device is quite large. With that said, it's not that hard to get used to. There's a little menu for all the symbols and such. I wish this had a USB port so I didn't have to use the keyboard, but that's not too important.
I think the biggest frustration with this machine is that it leaves these margins on one end of each label unless you print a bunch together. You have to cut the end off with scissors manually each label and it gets old if you want to make tons, but hey, small price to pay for nice labels. It does give you two little dots so you know where to cut.
Overall though, the machine feels really quite well built. There's nothing about it I hate, and its minor quirks are easily overlooked. For $20, I'm happy with what it is. If you're on the fence on whether to buy this, I'd say go for it. I like the labels it makes and it's quite a neat little toy.
One major negative is that it wastes a lot of extra tape from the beginning of any label due to how it is loaded. Or maybe by design? Either way, it could be improved to produce less waste!
