Great 3 way head for astrophotography.
5 out of 5 stars
Great 3 way head for astrophotography.
Used this 3 way head to mount my star tracker. Great product with some minor design flaws which were easily overcome with the L bracket as seen in the photo. The L bracket was necessary to elevate the tracker above the head control knobs to avoid the camera from binding on them.

This tripod head works fantastically and is a massive improvement from a ball head for doing macro or product photography where it's necessary to get very precise accuracy. My ball head would always droop slightly after I clamped it down. This head has macro and micro adjustment knobs that adjust perfectly and prevents movement after the adjustment. Each knob has an angle indicator gauge with 5-degree markings, and there's a bubble level for each axis. The QR plate attaches securely and protects your gear from tumbling off if you loosen it while tilted. Great product!

The kit weighs 7 kg and is used to take shots at odd angles - birds to the moon. Most mounting heads wobble, wiggle, or slip making longer exposures impossible. The Benro is fantastic. Solid. Well designed with a smooth gear function and clutch release for manual rotation. A delightful piece of engineering and ever so competent.

It is ridiculous that this geared head does not ship with the adapter that is necessary to use it on a tripod with a sizable flat base. Fortunately the base of one of my tripods is small enough to have enabled me to use this geared head before I could source the adapter elsewhere. The head made it easy to keep the Sun centered when I photographed the recent total eclipse. (My video head would sag at least a little after I tightened it during practice for the eclipse. This geared head did not sag at all and enabled either large or small adjustments easily.)

I use systematic tripods, first from Gitzo and then have moved to Benro as Gitzo does not support Canadian market for defective gear to my satisfaction. I use both an aluminum and fiber tripods from Benro, 75mm levelling bases, fluid heads, geared columns, and all that kind of stuff paired with USA made Kessler jibs, sliders, second shooter... I used to use the Bogen/Manfrotto 410 and 405 heads but went with this Benro for weight and price along with the fact that it is setup for Arca standard and includes a plate (I have adapter plates for the 410.405 to Arca but they were expensive and heavy too). So I mostly use the geared head on the bottom of the Benro geared column (they switch out in seconds with the systematic design without tools), and I find it really good for video and timelapse at low angles with heavy camera/lens setups. The results are precise and repeatable, and the head quickly moves with the gears disengaged so you really have two types of adjustment and that makes setup fast. I use Smallrig cages and bolt the arca plate to either the cage top or top-hot depending on weather an XLR adapter is attached (Panasonic), and I am really pleased with the value of this geared head, and Benro products overall. My only longterm criticism of the Benro products (all of them) is either the bubble levels fall-out, break, or fade away in the sun to being useless within two years, so I will check back in 2022 and update whether the bubbles survive. Suggestion to Benro...either include extra bubbles, eliminate them, or buy something that matches the rest of the quality of your gear.

I almost bought another brand from a big tripod manufacturer. So glad I went with this.
I am taking a lot of night sky photos and this makes it so much easier to level the camera and adjust my framing since most times I can't see anything through the viewfinder or LCD. Taking a shot, then trying to adjust framing with a ball-type head is hit-and-miss. With this, once I know I am level, it stays that way as I make minor (or major) adjustments to the other planes.
One tip: The head has a vertical/tilt adjustment from -90 degrees (straight down - for macro etc.) to +30 degrees. If you are taking star photos and need more vertical tilt, simply mount the camera reversed to the normal direction and you can tilt up by 90 degrees.

I recently got into Real Estate Photography, and in following online tutorials and books by one of my favourite influencers, he recommended this product.
It's the most in-expensive geared head on the market, yet, it performs like you'd expect from the expensive heads.
The downside that people often bring up is that subtle adjustments are easy, but the big adjustments take longer than a ball head. I haven't really found that, as the only "big adjustment" would be "pan", and I leave my pan pretty loose on my tripod and just spin the camera that way.
I used to straighten my images in post-processing, and while that kind of got stuff mostly level, having a geared head on has improved my lines (doors/windows) like... 200%! Just because a camera seems level on the roll axis (bank left/right), if it is off on the pitch axis (tilt up/down), it will create fun-house lines in certain places.
The little bubble level on the Arca-Swiss Compatible QR Plate does all the work. When mounting, make sure that it is facing towards where you'll be standing behind the camera. Now, mounting it that way makes the 90* turn hard to reach (going from portrait to landscape), but really, the only adjustments most will be making will be pan&tilt to line up the bubble.
It is surprising how much I adjust those almost every shot, but it's because the floors are not as even as you'd think; no wonder my angles and lines were such a mess before this.
If anyone were to get into real-estate photography, this would be #5 on my list of essential items (1-Camera, 2-Lens, 3-Speed Light, 4-Tripod, 5-Geared Head).
The youtuber that recommended it has used his for over 200 listings and hasn't had an issue.
Can't recommend this more!

Used primarily for macro photography. I find the geared adjustments eliminate lens creep or sag experienced with ball&socket tripod heads.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rotula muy versátil
Reviewed in Spain on October 3, 2023

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Geared head for precision
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 19, 2023

I like the way you can make micro changes to the position of the camera quickly and very accurately, it is excellent for positioning star tracker units and aligning to Polaris with pin prick precision without having to twist a ball head screw tightly only to find it moves out of position when released, this geared head eleminates all those stresses associated with ball heads. Once you try this method you will never want to use a ball head again! The clutch release system is also a brilliant idea if you want a sudden large change in position without having to turn the gear over and over to reach the desired position, its fast and easy to do, though on a design point the spikey clutch grip piece i think would have been much design had it been based on a pressable locking button because they can be quite awkward to engage because the strong spring system they use, it has quite a lot of spring resistance (too much in my opinion) and a button system would not only make it easier but probably more compact too, which leads me onto the next dislike, the size! The unit is very bulky and i'm sure it could have been completely scaled down a bit so that it is less bulky in size, and finally my final dislike is that the camera swiss arca plate platform is slightly offset from the centre of the tripod which alters the centre of gravity to be more off balance, i would have much preferred to see the camera end up directly centred over the tripod centre for better stability and better centre of gravity.

That all said and done with its pros and cons i can with no question at all definitely give it a 5 star review, i would still 100% recommend this geared head over any ball head system out there. Go buy it! It has made my camera tripod life a breeze.

The Best camera related purchase of this year for me! It is a fairly expensive purchase but worth every penny its value for money, and compared to the competition it is actually very cheap by comparison.

If a version 2 with these design amendments came out it would be totally unbeatable.

I really like how there is plenty of attention to detail but the whole thing is a lot bigger than k expected. That means it’s really stable but also not ideal for travel.
