In Any Lifetime: A Novel Kindle Edition

A devoted husband defies fate and risks everything to find the one universe where his beloved wife is still alive in this bold and thought-provoking novel.

Dr. Jonas Cullen has spent his career as a groundbreaking physicist defying the odds. But on the best night of his life—the night his wife, Amanda, tells him they’re finally having a baby—everything is taken away when a tragic car accident claims the lives of Amanda and their unborn child.

Gutted by pain, Jonas sets out to find a way to bring back Amanda—or rather, find a parallel universe in which she’s still alive. But that’s easier said than done. As Jonas comes to understand all too well, the universe favors certain outcomes…and Amanda’s death is one of them.

Guggenheim’s novel takes readers on a suspenseful journey, intercutting scenes of Jonas’s frantic, present-day search across multiple realities with glimpses from the past of his unfolding romance and eventual marriage. Will Jonas and Amanda reunite in some other world, or will fate succeed in taking her from him forever?

From the Publisher

Some go to the ends of the earth for love, but one man will go to the ends of the universe. In Any Lifetime is what would happen if Michael Crichton had written The Time Traveler’s Wife.

When Jonas, a physicist, loses his pregnant wife, Amanda, he puts what had been only theories—until now—into practice, and sets off to find a universe where she is still alive. The odds are against him, because the universe actually seems to believe in destiny, which means there is only one universe out of billions where Amanda still lives. Now, Jonas has to fight not only against fate, but also against alternate versions of himself
and the doubts in his own heart to find out whether it’s possible to love someone too much.

I could not read this fast enough, eager to experience Guggenheim’s just-slightly-different versions of our world, and found myself screaming in frustration along with Jonas when he discovered yet another world where Amanda didn’t exist, then crying happy tears while reliving their love story. I hope all versions of
you enjoy this spellbinding book that proves that the laws of physics are no match for love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant surprise - entertaining & well written, though familiar...

Parallel universe and romance plots usually seem to me at least somewhat similar to others I've read, and neither is a favorite. But I picked this First Reads as a flyer out of what seemed a meager array of choices for me, especially in a month I can choose two. Now, because I felt entertained, as well as educated - mostly from pausing to look up things (mainly concepts and places) - and because I much enjoyed the quick, fun read, I'm happily calling this a five.

Should be titled In Any Universe.

At times, this book was almost too science, and very close to being science fiction, which I don't like. However, there is enough story in the midst of it all to make it worth finishing. I read this book in under 24 hours. I had to get to the end, had to see if there would be a reunification. You will, too.

I got this book free, and I got what I paid for. Gave up on it quickly. Characters had less depth than the average mud puddle. The physicist protagonist walks into CERN(!) and starts up the particle collider without seeing a single security guard. Eventually makes it to a parallel universe, but doesn't realize he has until he notices the numbers 3 and 4 are flipped on a watch face . . . .
If you really like the multiverse idea, go to the people who know (or knew) how to do it. Try Diane Duane's Stealing the Elf-King's Roses, or Andre Norton's The Crossroads of Time.
