Please be aware that it's the first time I use the product. My opinion of it might change if I encounter issues along the way. Prior to this product I was using a 24 inch square light tent with 2 fluorescent lights on each side. It was tedious to set up hence my need for something that was all inclusive. Assembly is somewhat easy without even needing the manual but I would suggest reading it anyway. The box is hefty and seems solid once assembled. Much more than the flimsy light tent that I have which seems to sag a little more with each use. Once plugged in the quantity of light is good especially with the front flap closed. The light seems neutral which is good (I expected the typical blue cast of LED lights but there is no cast that I can see). Even the camera set on auto white balance gets it right the first time every time (in this case a crop sensor DSLR with a 60mm macro lens, not a phone). There is slightly more light on the left side than on the right because of the way they are disposed inside. This is perfect since it allows just a little bit of shadow detail on the left making the subjects less flat. What immediately struck me was the excellent material used for the background. If you have ever used a tent with felt like material you know how these pick up dirt and hair like nothing else and it's virtually impossible to clean. The material in this box is different. It reflects light well and will be super easy to clean with a moisten rag since it is smooth. I wanted to start by taking pictures from the front. For this review I just opened the middle flap (3 magnetized flaps of different height, very ingenious) and put the little plastic toy soldier inside. I had to use 500-800 ISO at my chosen F Stop of 5.6 - 7.1 in order to get enough light to hand hold at between 1/80 and 1/200 of a second. I played with exposure compensation a lot for each subject. Since the background is white, the subjects will tend to be underexposed so +0.7 to +2.0 could be needed so the background turns to almost pure white. For the second subject (the salt shaker), I wanted to try a black background since the subject would not stand out well on white. I took a felt background that came with my 24 inch tent and stuck it temporarily at the top of the included background with cheap masking tape. By using negative exposure compensation I managed to turn the background very close to perfect black. This worked much better than I anticipated. For the third subject I wanted to use the top opening which is perfect for flat objects. I also wanted to see how a highly reflective surface like metal would look when top lit. The results were good again but I couldn't adjust the exposure to get pure white without the coins coming out overexposed so the background is not quite white. The only thing I don't like about the top opening is that because the diameter is limited, it doesn't allow the lens to get close to a small item such as this. The result is that I had to heavily crop so that the coins would fill the frame. Be aware that if you photograph very small items from the top, you will need a longer lens (I'm thinking 100mm on a crop sensor) or be prepared to crop most of your image with the inherent loss of resolution that will result. All the pictures needed minimum post processing in the form of a slight contrast and sharpness boost.I'm really impressed with this light box so far. It seems to be well thought out and will help everybody take better pictures of whatever they want to sell or show off. I'm taking off one star because at this price point, Amazon needs to supply a black background with it. It needs a dimmer on the lights to make it just a little bit brighter when it is needed. I would have liked to shoot at a lower ISO but couldn't unless I would have used a tripod. The slight increase of light would be most welcomed.
