To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.

Arrived on time. Logged on and it set up automatically with my Amazon account including all my past Kindle reading purchases. Lightning fast. Crisp clear picture. A good solid tablet. A great value for the price.

I just bought this Fire Tablet HD 8 12th generation on sale at a great price to replace my 2 year old Fire HD 8 10th gen model. Previously to buying into Fire, I've owned a string of iPads but for the price, I really can't fault these Fire tablets at all. I use it primarily for reading ePubs, streaming music, email and a bit of social media. It ticks all these boxes at a very reasonable price. I'm not noticing much difference in overall performance with the 12th gen over the 10th gen but at this price point and the 5 equal payments option, I couldn't resist. The setup with this new model was seamless and quickly restored all the settings from backups of my older model. With a simple install of play store, I was good to go. I bought the 32GB model and simply boosted storage with an inexpensive Micro SD card. The Fire HD 8 (12th Gen) meets my requirements.

It is a good tablet for simple entertainment but it lags a bit. No Google Play but the Amazon Appstore has a couple of useful apps, games, etc. Netflix and YouTube work well. Great screen quality.
The Photos app doesn’t work; we can’t see the pictures we have taken but we can still see the photos on another app if you send those to someone.

I am going to preface this with the following. I have a Android Tablet and an iPad.
I purchased this device for 1 and 1 reason only. To listen to Audiable.
As an Android tablet, it is inoffensive. The buttons are not placed in a way I'd like making the top of the tablet very busy. But with the addition of a USB-C port and a headphone port more than makes up for it.
From a "official" software experience wise, if you just want a device to entertain your kids with. Disney Plus, some books and Netflix. Then it's a cheap and "safe" buy, if you are OK giving Amazon your usage data.
However the minute you try to use anything outside of Amazon's "ecosystem" it turns into a nightmare. Wanna read a Kobo Book or listen to a Audiobook from Google Play? Good Luck sideloading everything, or being force to use the browser to get some functionality.
What's worse is that if you live in Canada, Audiable can't be found anywhere and refuses to install even if you figure out how to side load.
However after too much time here is my steps to get this device... mostly usable.
1) Install a F-Droid Client, (droid-ify my go-to), here you can install third party launchers (important for later), third party browsers, ePub readers for DRM-free books (KOReader FTW), and more if you so desire.
2) On you F-Droid app, download Aurora Store. A open source Google Play client which makes side loading offical apps easy. You may want to sign in to the app with a Google Account if you want to search on it.
3) On Aurora Store you can download pretty much anything else you needs (and keep it up to date), from Kobo, and Libby. Sadly Google Play books won't work since you are missing Google Play's frameworks, but with Adobe Digital Editions and VLC you can download and read Google Play books from the downloaded acm files from Google Play, and audio books can downloaded directly to your device.
4) Now remember how I said that Audable doesn't work on the Fire Tablet, despite saying that it's the reason I got it. Well with a third party Launcher like Lawn Chair, you can see all the pre-installed apps Amazon didn't want Canadians to play with... including Audable.
Now with all this said if you want to keep the device upto date, then you can't change the default launcher (-1 star), and the fact that amazon's own services are knee-caped which makes even the unbranded tablets look like a better deal (-1 star). It makes it hard to recommend.
However it's easy to setup, and it comes from a reputable (both good and bad) company. So please do with this as you will.

Love this little tablet. It's perfect for checking emails and socials. You are limited to the Amazon play store but it carries most apps that are available on Google play store. Only drawback for me was not being able to download travel apps like flight tracker, hotel apps, or travel apps. The most common social apps are all available.

As a long time Mac user, I am pleasantly surprised with this tablet. I know it is set up for entertainment only, but I have already used it for product research, and blog writing for my business. I can set it on a small stand beside my laptop and open Power Thesaurus, which I use a fair bit for writing. It is easier than switching back and forth online. My original intent was to take it camping this summer, so I can watch videos in the evening, check emails, use the Internet, etc. It means I do not have to worry about taking an expensive MacBook Pro while camping. I have only had this little tablet a couple of days, and so far, I can see it will come in handy.

The Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet offers great value for its price. The display is clear and bright, perfect for watching videos and reading e-books. The performance is decent for everyday tasks like web browsing and checking emails, although it can be a bit slow with more demanding apps. Battery life is good, lasting a full day with moderate use. The expandable storage is a nice feature, allowing me to store plenty of apps, photos, and media. Overall, it's a solid budget tablet that meets my needs without breaking the bank
