Does the Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor detect mold?
The Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor detects elements that can contribute to or result from mold growth, including Humidity, Particulate Matter (PM 2.5) and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC).
What is Particulate Matter (PM 2.5) and what does it entail?
The Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor measures Particulate Matter that is between 0.3µm and 2.5µm in diameter. Particulate matter (PM 2.5) is a mixture of dust particles, dirt and liquid droplets suspended in the air. PM is reported in micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³). PM can be directly emitted from wind-blown dust, mold spores, pollen and wildfires. PM found indoors may include particles that have migrated from outdoor sources like pollen or dirt and have originated from indoor sources like dusting, pet dander, vacuuming, burning candles, cooking, use of fireplaces or smoking.
What are Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and what do they entail?
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are a variety of chemicals that easily evaporate into the air at room temperature. The total VOCs are reported as a relative change in intensity on a scale from 1 to 100. VOCs evaporate into the air we breathe from a wide array of sources. Common sources of VOCs in the home can range from the aroma of citrus fruits or scented candles to paints, cleaning supplies, pesticides, building materials and furnishings, office equipment such as printers, craft materials like glues and markers and a variety of cosmetic products.
Does the Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor detect Radon or CO2?
The Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor does not measure Carbon Dioxide (CO2) or Radon. This device detects and reports on 5 components of air quality, including: Particulate Matter (PM 2.5), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Humidity, and Temperature
How long does the device calibrate after set up?
You can check your indoor air quality score in the Alexa app after the initial 7-minute calibration completes. The device will then take up to 2 days to adjust to the surrounding environment. If you unplug your device, the device will go through the 7-minute calibration again.

It provides valuable insights into five key factors: particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), humidity, and temperature. With this monitor, you can easily track and measure these parameters to ensure a healthier living environment. Compared to my Airthings Wave Plus, this doesn’t measure Radon, CO2, and air pressure. However, my Wave Plus also lacks PM and CO monitor on the other hand. Considering Airthings Wave Plus costs about 3 times more, I’m happy with what it offers.
The air quality monitor dashboard is built-in Alexa. Setup with Alexa is straightforward, making it accessible to users of all technical abilities. Once connected, you can conveniently check the air quality score in the Alexa app, which provides an easy-to-understand assessment of your indoor air quality. The fact that this is using Alexa has both pros and cons to it. The cons is that it takes a few more clicks to get to see what you care about the most especially if you don’t already use Alexa for other purposes. The pros are that this doesn’t require one additional app if you are already an Alexa user and plan to use other integrated features such as Routine. E.g. you can turn on the air purifier when the air quality drops, or turn on the dehumidifier when the humidity is too high.
I also found this Amazon Air Quality monitor to be very accurate. I see it’s giving very consistent data when I put it side by side with other air quality monitors I own. Overall, I find this Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor to be a reliable and valuable device for monitoring and improving the air quality at home. With its comprehensive tracking capabilities, easy-to-understand data, and integration with Alexa and other smart devices, it helps me to take action to create a healthier living environment.

- Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor
- CMTOOL Air Quality Tester, Carbon Dioxide, Formaldehyde, Temperature, Humidity, TVOC
- Temtop CO2 Monitor Indoor Air Quality Monitor
- VSON Air Quality Monitor, PM2.5/PM10/ HCHO/TVOC
While it is nice that the Amazon monitor does evaluate PM 2.5 levels, it would have been better if it monitored PM 10 levels as well. Typically most households are more affected by particulate matter that is larger in size (pollen, dust, pet dander) and a monitor that only registers PM 2.5 might miss these larger particles that are more commonly found in a household and negatively affecting someone's comfort while breathing. There is some overlap of course, but, the VSON monitoring both PM 2.5 and PM 10 does make it a better tool if Particular Matter is a significant concern for someone.
Connecting Alexa to the Monitor was a bit time consuming and took multiple attempts.
It is kind of irritating to have to turn on Alexa every time I want to look at the monitor's reading, and the App takes some time to display the information.
Whenever you unplug the monitor to transfer to another room it takes around 7 minutes for the unit to calibrate. Once again, it is less than ideal that the monitor requires being plugged in to operate, but, for long term monitoring of spaces in one's home, it does make sense. Though, if the battery lasted as long as Temtop's monitor (2 weeks or more), this wouldn't be a concern.
It would be nice if the temperature reading could also be changed to Celsius for Non-American users.
Changing from Fahrenheit to Celsius by subtracting 32 and dividing by 2 isn't hard, but it's not as accurate as simply just switching between metrics in App.
The measurements seemed accurate when compared to the other monitors though I found that the humidity rating with the Amazon was usually a few percentage points higher than the Temtop and the CMTOOL. Still within a margin of error I would say.
Caveats aside, I would personally recommend the Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor, for its value proposition of measuring 5 Air Quality Metrics (Temperature, Humidity, Carbon Monoxide, VOC, and PM). It has great build quality, very minimalist design, and good accuracy. It's a shame it isn't battery powered, and the need to download Alexa onto your smartphone is a definite negative, but it is the best bang for one's buck I found after my research and testing.
I did not believe that I would find the other monitored values helpful but I was wrong. Just this morning I noticed that the VOC value shot up and I was able to find a leaking aerosol can in the room next to the sensor, had I not had this monitor I would not have noticed this until later in the evening and likely it would have made a mess and deteriorated the air quality in our house. I'm sure I'll also find a use for the temperature sensor if I decide to add a heater to that side of my basement for winter and I love that I can monitor C0 values from my phone when I'm away.
I highly highly recommend this product. I wish I bought it sooner honestly.
