Needed more detectors around the whole house, but the basic kit didn't have enough. But with this simple add on, it's simple to install onto the walls and pair with the mother ship! Scan the QR code, and voila!
The system has really gotten better in the 2nd generation - pairing and sizing is a lot more discrete. Definitely an upgrade from 1st generation - having both versions show their differences!
Only downside is the annual registration pricing has increased a bit - so that is definitely a downside once you're tied into the ring ecosystem.

These definitely detect motion. They are easy to install, my husband just pressed it to the wall and they haven't moved at all since installation and it has been a couple months.

Great PIR, wireless motion detection for Ring Alarm
Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2024Style: 1-PackVerified Purchase
I ordered two of these units, and they are super easy to program into your Ring Alarm System. The onbe in my living room is mounted on a wall in a corner, and the one upstairs is simply placed on a dresser, with a view of the room and hallway. They operate as they should, and in 8 months, I have not have not had any false alarms. So I'm, quite pleased.

Defective Sensor! Hours on phone! Customer looses!
Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2023Style: 1-PackVerified Purchase
I have a whole house ring alarm system and cameras. Pay monthly for monitoring! Never any issues until this sensor!!
Sensor has had issues almost immediately! Going offline!
Set off my alarm system while out of town at midnight.
Contacted ring multiple times spent hours on phone with tech department. They kept saying if it goes offline we should replace it! Never did.
I always get stuck being the arms and hands of the tech. Push this button do this in the app! Contacted them one last time. Same response have to follow process! Which I get, but how many hours of tech calls before realizing the issue is reoccurring and product is defective. Anyways, ring you win!! You wore me out, guess I will just take the loss and buy another sensor!! I hope that one is not defective too!!!

Easy to install in conjunction with Ring security system
Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2024Style: 2-PackVerified Purchase
Bought to add to my system. The instructions provide for sensitivity adjustments to attempt to prevent false alarms by pets and state that these motion detectors are not recommended for households with "large" dogs. I have an 80lb dog and now have 3 of these Ring motion detectors in my home. 2 are mounted at the recommended 7.5' height, the 3rd is just over 8'. I have thoroughly tested all 3 by throwing dog toys into the areas with the motion sensor so my dog chases after them, jumps up on couch or bed, etc. Two are set to maximum sensitivity and the 3rd is set to medium. They all trigger on humans but none trigger on our dog, even when she is jumping on a bed or running directly in front of the motion sensor. So, huge relief. 5 stars to Ring!

You cannot set these to ignore large dogs
Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2020Style: 1-PackVerified Purchase
I have recently purchased a Ring Home Security system to replace my ancient ADT system. I am kicking myself for not doing this sooner, although the 2nd Generation Ring system has only just come out. The whole system is very easy to install, and the components are significantly cheaper than ADT. Additionally, the monthly monitoring fee is $10/month if you purchase a year in advance, or $13 if you go month to month, and this includes online storage of all video shot for the past 90 days. I dropped ADT because they raised my monitoring rate from $51 to nearly $55 per month, and I had no video cameras in the system. The savings in monitoring will pay for my entire Ring system including monitoring in a year. I purchased an additional motion detector as an add-on to the basic system. All I had to do was open the Ring app, open the menu, select devices, and then "add device." The app then walked me through it. I selected 2nd Gen motion sensor, then pulled the plastic tab out of the battery compartment, and the sensor found the network, and all I had to do was name it, stick it to the wall, and run a test to make sure it was sensing motion. It arrives out of the box with its sensitivity set to maximum. I set it to minimum to see if my dogs could pass through its field of view without being detected. My smaller dog, at 50 pounds could get through about half of the time; however, my larger dog at 90 pounds is detected every time he passes through. So, I'm leaving the sensors at maximum sensitivity and will only set my alarm for "away" when we are out of the house with the dogs. If we leave the dogs at home, we have to set the alarm for "stay," which activates all of the sensors except the motion detectors. Not a big sacrifice, as anyone would have to be an idiot to break into our house with the two dogs barking at them from within. So far, I am very happy with the RIng system, and their customer support.
