The active ingredients of Alka-Seltzer is basically baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and lemon juice (citric acid). They combine in water to form sodium citrate which is the actual ingredient that raises the PH level and therefore neutralizing stomach acidity. Most antacids all work the same. I like the travel friendliness of the effervescent tablets, and the regular version tastes like a lemon soft drink which is much better than the salty extra strength version.Alka-Seltzer (24 tablet version) is offered in both regular and extra strength. The actual difference in dosage is only an extra 300mg of baking soda for $2 more (Regular = $7, Extra Strength = $9). To me, the regular strength is the better value. If you don't need tablet form, you can get even better value with a 200g bottle of ENO which has the same active ingredient and equates to 40 uses for $9. Better yet if you want chewables, a bottle of 160x Ultra Strength TUMS could be the value king ($8) and you also get a nice boost of Calcium in the process!Overall, it's a tried-and-true product that's travel friendly but there's definitely better value options out there.

Normally for heartburn at night I'll make a glass of water with a teaspoon of baking soda and have it on my nightstand. The thing is baking soda water tastes awful. This does the same thing accept has a nice lemon flavor. Although it has baking soda in it and other stuff it's not as powerful as just a teaspoon of baking soda but it does work great if your heartburn is normal. For those time when my heartburn is going out of control crazy I'll have to use 2 tablets which is fine but gets expensive.
