It's important to set expectations upfront: this isn't professional studio gear. Instead, it's a budget-friendly option for specific needs. For those starting out in photography or working within a budget, the Anautin backdrop stand offers a decent entry point.

So what do youi get for your money? It comes with a full kit: 2 tripod stands, a 4-section crossbar, 8 clamps, 6 clips for stretching your backdrop, 2 "sandbag pouches", and a convenient carrying bag. For around 70 CAD, this is a fair amount of equipment.

Setting up the stand is quite easy. The tripods and crossbar extend, offering flexibility in terms of backdrop size and the space you're working in. You can adjust the crossbar up to 10 feet and the tripods to 7 feet.

As expected with a budget product, the stand is made of light metal with plastic knobs. The manufacturer claims it's suitable for outdoor use, but I wouldn't recommend it. While the concept of the shape of the supplied "sandbags" sounds like a good idea, hugging the tripod legs from all three sides, it's not practical. I would call them sandbag pouches rather than sandbags. Nevertheless, the pouches are small and do not fit my sandbags, so I got roid of them and used my traditional sandbags instead. Even with the sandbags, the stand seems flimsy in windy conditions. The crossbar also tends to bow with heavier backdrops when fully extended. The clamps, however, are strong and hold the backdrop in place without slipping. The clips are also a nice touch, helping to keep your backdrop taut.

So, who it's for and who it's not for? This backdrop stand is not for everyone. If you're looking for professional-grade equipment or plan to shoot outdoors, look elsewhere. However, for indoor use with lighter backdrops, it's a serviceable option. It's perfect for portrait photography, product photography, or other light-duty work where durability isn't a major concern.

To sum it all up, here's a list of pros and cons that I hope will help you decide.

Pros:

Budget-friendly
Easy to set up
Adjustable for different spaces and backdrop sizes
Strong clamps
Includes clips for keeping backdrop taut

Cons:

Not suitable for outdoor use
Metal construction is not the best among competition
"Sandbags" are small and not practical
Crossbar bows with heavier backdrops

Overall Verdict

The Anautin Backdrop Stand is a decent option if you're on a tight budget and need a basic stand for indoor photography. It's not the best budget backdrop stand on the market, but it gets the job done for light use.

For the money, this set exceeded my expectations. Of course it's a light duty setup, with lightweight stands, but it is perfectly fine for someone starting out, or just simply on a budget.

There are a few things in the product descriptions that I don't agree with.

First is the outdoor use.
This setup is definitely not built to withstand any kind of wind. Not only the "sandbags" included with the kit have very small capacity, but the stands themselves are too delicate and will likely get damaged. Sure, it will be fine on a perfectly calm day, but can you guarantee that there won't be any gusts? I wouldn't take it outdoors, I've had to patch a few backdrop stands that got mangled by the wind in the first hours of a day long event and it's just a waste of time.

Second issue is the height of the stand.
7 feet is a stretch. It would require adjusting the bases to a steeper angle creating a very unstable platform. Properly set up it's just over 6 feet. The height makes this set less than ideal for shooting people who are standing up - there is just not much backdrop above their heads. Some creativity with positioning will be needed.

Other than that, this kit includes everything that is needed (minus the backdrops) to get you started. The included accessories make it easy to attach the backdrop, and everything fits in the provided convenient pouch. Considering that the current price with a coupon is under $50, this offers a fantastic value whether you want to experiment with photography or just have a portable stand for a projector screen.
