Frequently Asked Questions

Can my pet have this test even though they are not showing any visible symptoms?

Of Course! The beauty of our testing process is that it will register food items whether or not your pet has ever consumed the food item or not. That way you will know what items you should or should not feed your pet. Even if you have previously fed your pet an item, such as pork, and it shows up on the test, it does not necessarily mean that your pet will show a visible symptom. Most of the time the symptoms do not manifest unless you are feeding your pet that food item every single day. In addition, some symptoms are not always visible such as joint pain or a tummy ache. If you continue feeding your pet a food item every day, the symptom may continue until it manifests itself into a visible symptom. If you are already doing what you were intended to do with your pet's nutrition plan, then that might explain why your pet does not express any visible symptoms. We have had instances where pet parents have removed the offending items even though their pet was not showing any visible symptoms. After several weeks, they noticed that their pet showed signs of increased activity and energy. We have seen this happen with people too.

How long does it take to see improvement for your pet once you eliminate level 3 and/or level 2 food items?

Our testing is designed to help you become more in tune with your body. After eliminating the level 3 and level 2 items for 6-8 weeks, you can re-introduce one item at a time into your diet. If you eat it and wait a few days, and do not have any symptoms, then your body may have re-balanced and you will be able to continue to eat the item again in moderation. Some of our customers choose to retest every 6 months or so, but this is not entirely necessary if you have become more in tune with your body and can identify what foods may be causing the symptoms you experience.

Is it correct that something can show up as an intolerance because the pet has been consuming the item often?

If your pet has a food intolerance, it means that your pet is lacking the digestive enzyme to break that particular food down. So the reaction is not life threatening and may take hours or days after eating the food to manifest any type of symptom. Unlike a true allergy, where only a trace amount can trigger a reaction, with an intolerance symptom, it may manifest only if they eat a substantial amount of the food. So it is not the act of consuming the item often that creates the intolerance. The intolerance is always there, it is really the manifestation of the symptoms that becomes more apparent with over consumption. That is why it is always recommended to feed in rotation and moderation after the initial elimination period to avoid triggering any unwanted symptoms.

Dietary & Lifestyle Adjustments

The first steps in conducting an elimination plan is to utilize the master list that is emailed to you with the results. You would cross off your registered level 3 and level 2 food items on the master list. The remaining items would be the items you would want to eat for 6-8 weeks. After eliminating these level 3 and level 2 intolerances out of your diet for 6-8 weeks, you can add back one offending food item at a time. Wait up to 48 hours to see if you experience any noticeable symptoms. The body may have been able to heal and re-balance itself from this intolerance, and you will be able to eat the food item again without any issues, but only in moderation. If you notice a symptom after eating this offending food item, keep in mind that you can eat this food again, but you may still experience an undesirable symptom.

Great product, thorough report, great customer service.
Easy instructions provided. Sent 10-15 dog hairs in for testing. Quick response once received, they texted me to confirm my email. I received a thorough report of what my dog (GSD) had intolerances to, including food, and environmental. I have since switched my dog raw diet to comply and have seen a reduction in his scratching already. Well worth the money.

I’m so happy that I decided to bite the bullet and get this allergy/intolerance test done for my rescue dog. Ever since I started fostering him almost 2 years ago, he’s been itchy, had dashed, GI problems and shed so much! We’ve cut out all of the yellow and red foods for 1.5 weeks now and his fur is already softer, no more itching and he barely sheds now!

The test is super easy to do! No saliva sample, just brush their fur and stick it in the pre paid envelope that they give you and send it off. It took about a week from the time I send the envelope to when I got the results. Super fast! The layout of the results are emailed to you and simple do follow.

I highly recommend doing this test!

PS. My vet said that the test through them is $700 and to get this test instead. I’m happy with her recommendation!

I’m outraged by the negative reviews on this product... especially the person who said they got sent results without sending in their sample (they email you results so how would they have gotten your email)
Collecting the hair was simple..I live in Canada and paid $30 for express tracked shipping..they email you when your sample arrives and in 5 business days I had the results. They are extremely thorough and a little difficult to understand but I think you need to use your brain to interpret the results. My dog has been shedding excessively, licking her paws and lady bits, scooting her butt and she’s had 3 ear infections in the last 2 years. she’s on a raw diet and we already tried cutting out chicken and pork to no avail. It was difficult for us to figure out what the problem was..and we went with this test kit because it’s more thorough on what it tests (example..my dog is allergic to pork fat..but not pork meal or bone or organs) so for the raw diet I felt it was better to have the thorough breakdown instead of just “pork”. Anyways the biggest cause we learned is beef (she’s reacting to all forms of beef) so I will be reworking her diet to elimite beef and fish and we will evaluate from there. I feel like this is a small price to pay to figure out what’s wrong instead of having to figure it out blindly.
Anyways I recommend this product and I think people who haven’t purchased and tried it shouldn’t be leaving reviews (my vet was extremely negative on this test as well..told me it’s not possible to test allergies using hair or saliva) I’m glad I didn’t listen and gave it a shot. To be clear..it doesn’t test the allergies that are instant reactions (like mouth/ throat swelling..you wouldn’t need the kit if the dog reacts RIGHT AWAY to an allergen..this is for intolerances. Thank you.

The test definitely isn’t accurate. It says my dog is allergic to almost everything and the things I know for sure he is allergic to, the test says he has to no reaction to.
Definitely wouldn’t recommend spending the money.

I originally left a bad review, but after having the explanation, I wanted to edit and say that I’m extremely impressed with the customer service! :)

Ok, so a lot of mixed reviews on this...here is my take on it. I was having the hardest time with my Frenchie. No idea what foods were making her so itchy! On a whim, I purchased this kit. I wasn't expecting much but I was hopeful.
The report was 5 or 6 pages long and included environmental sensitivities. Its perfect!!!
WARNING!! This is not going to pin point one thing that is causing the issues, it will give you a report listing the degrees of sensitivities to MANY things...which at first can seem overwhelming, but in the end is a REALLY amazing report. Does it work? Well...I cut out the foods that were high on the list and my Frenchie has not scratched since....you tell me :)

I purchased this for my cat. She’s been having issues with allergies for a few years. Before spending a lot more money and stressing her out at the vet I decided to give this a try. Really happy I did! I had been feeding her all the wrong things all these years. Now we’re finally changing her diet over and hopefully no more itchy skin issues! I do recommend splurging the $27 to send it Express Post with a tracking number. Gives you peace of mind that you know it’ll get there after spending a bunch of money on the test.

I love this product. My dog, Aspen started to get ear infections and a ton of wax build up when she was 7.5 years old. She was getting them in the summer and winter. Our vet ruled out seasonal allergies leaving food or environmental. Our vet never offered any assistance with trying to help determine what was causing this so I started looking of test online. I came across this test on Amazon. My sister has spent roughly $600 on allergy testing for her dog so I thought why not give it a try. This test is super easy to do. The results are very easy to read. At my next vet appointment I tool the results with us. The vet tech had not heard of this company. She seems skeptical about it like it would not work. I explained how you had to get the hair out by the root and send it in she said that, that would work. She started asking where I got it and the cost. She was very excited about this product, just as excited as we were. I would highly recommend it!!!!

If you own a bulldog, you know. You can either spend $600 on vet allergy testing or as my vet recommended, get 5Strands intolerance testing kit. It’s very easy to use, simple grab some hair off your dog and send it back to their lab with the prepaid envelope. The results really help to navigate the complex and confusing world of dog food. You can fine tune what exactly your dog should stay away from by the 0-3 sensitivity scale. I found out my frenchie was a 3 for all chicken products. Then I found out how hard it is to find food without any chicken in it! I really recommend this product especially if you’re having a hard time identifying what’s causing your dogs allergies.

My poor fur baby has been suffering with allergies for a long time. I’ve tried switching to different foods several times. But it’s a guessing game if you don’t know what’s causing allergies. So I decided to get this test. The process was really easy to do. All the instructions are inside the kit. It only took a few days to get the results back. Upon reviewing the results, I could see exactly why my dog has been having so many skin allergies! Now I know what to eliminate from his diet and we’re on the way to a healthier pup!

I’ll give an update in a few weeks to see how things are going after eliminating the foods that he’s intolerant to. The important take away is that now I know what my dog is intolerant to and I can take action, rather than guessing what’s causing problems for him!

UPDATE:
Turkey came back as no reaction, green coded and totally safe. So we switched her food to Turkey. Turns out she's allergic. These tests feel very randomly generated, and flat out risky and unsafe for pet well being.
---Original Review---
We ordered this test after our doctor confirmed a severe chicken allergy in our dog and switched her to a lamb-based diet, which quite literally saved her life.

Without knowing it, feeding chicken-based foods led to an 18-month allergy flare that left my 2-year-old dog with permanent skin lesions and was threatening to make her go deaf from constant ear infections. She literally smelled like she was dying, and we were talking palliative care with our vet, who suggested an elimination diet as a last ditch attempt to figure out our dog's allergy. When we did the elimination diet and moved her to a lamb based diet, EVERY SINGLE physical symptom cleared up in about 72 hours of being off chicken.

We ordered this test because we wanted to scan for a suspected salmon intolerance and anything else we might have missed during her elimination diet. So we went in aware of a severe chicken allergy/intolerance, and knowing that lamb was safe.

So imagine our surprise to get our results where lamb flags as a worst of the worst intolerance - even more than the chicken that was killing her. If we were to put faith in these test results and didn't have the advanced knowledge going into the testing, we well may have taken her off the lamb food that has saved her life and moved her back to the chicken-based food that was killing her.

Our test results are also unlikely to be true based on statistical probabilities. Our kit returned
58 level 3 intolerances
64 level 2 intolerances
67 level one intolerances

That leaves 191 things that she didn't respond to. That means she had some form of intolerance to almost exactly 50% of things they tested for.

This split would not be realistic as a natural occurrence. We should expect to see significantly more non-issue and level one intolerance than level 2 and 3 intolerances. This adds to the distrust of the results.

Upon closer review of the flagged allergies and their severities on our report, we noticed that anything actually in her diet flagged as intolerant on some level. The ONLY things on this test that didn't flag were food items that just don't exist in her diet at all. I suspect that this test only tests for food IN THE DOG'S SYSTEM as opposed to foods that will actually harm them.

This makes sense, since Lamb would be the #1 thing in her diet, and it flagged as a level 3 "discontinue immediately" intolerance...when in reality it's a safe food for her. Chicken flagged as a level 2 intolerance, which makes sense since she's now been without it for nearly 8 weeks, with the exception of small amounts of chicken fat and by-product meal in her treats, but does have a SEVERE issue with chicken. So SOMETHING was in there, just not much, and it flagged as a lower intolerance than it should have.

I understand that the test doesn't bill itself as 100% accurate, but this test could have actually led to harm to our pet and that is scary.

Buy this for fun if you like, but please don't use this as a substitute for the spendy vet testing. Please don't make feeding and medication decisions based on this test. We feel like we wasted $150 on this test that could have been better allocated towards more advanced testing that is scientific and would have offered us true insight to our dog's unique needs. This test feels generic in nature and like it probably doesn't have anything to do with our dog at all.

The pros are that it is simple to do, fast, and causes the dog no discomfort.

I don't know how accurate this really is but I do know a lot of the items my dog tested positive to for sensitivity were right. Some of there items I don't understand. For example only, allergic/intolerant to salmon but not salmon oil. I would think if allergic/intolerant to one then it would be both. This is actually an intolerance test, not a true allergy test. Some things weren't right. But I do know my dog has a lot of intolerances/allergies and a lot on this test. If you want to use this as a starting point for general reference and somewhere to start with a dog that has "health" issues I would recommend it. I wouldn't take it to heart what it says but you might realize, hey my dog, or cat, does react when eating, just say fish, or hey, when the grass pollen is out he/she does show some kind of reaction. One vet blew this off as not being accurate and another thought is was good that I did it. But if it makes you feel better and helps give some understanding that counts for something. And was very easy to use. Got results fairly quickly, I think within a week.
