OK, I admit it. I bought one of these from Amazon Warehouse, "Excellent condition, packaging marked." I needed to replace an aging Hitachi 3 TB "bookcase" external HDD which was making noises like an old steam engine on its way out. This drive was easy to set up - I connected it to a port in my notebook dock - and I had no problems in partitioning the drive and setting up backups to it. it's extremely quiet, quite fast, and is a much smaller package (for a 3-1/2" drive) than the old 3 TB external drive its replacing. I've been running error checks and data comparisons since buying it about 2 months ago, and I've had no problems of any kind. When the drive arrived, I could not actually see anywhere that the packaging was defaced, and everything inside appeared to be unopened. The Warehouse price was a considerable saving over the "new" price, and I wasn't quite sure what I might receive. In any case, everything works, and works well. This was an excellent value purchase, especially for a large external drive. I try to stick to brand name drives, and WD drives have always given good service. This was a great deal all around, and this drive is compact and quiet. If they had another one at this price, I'd probably buy it for my other workstation. Certainly I'll be keeping an eye out. Two thumbs up.
UPDATE FEB 1, 2023: My original review stands as is; the drive has worked, quietly and flawlessly since buying it in 2021. I partitioned the HDD, approximately "2/3 Data & 1/3 Backup" and that's worked out well. I've only needed to restore from Backup once, but it was seamless and all worked as it should. Around the end of November 2022, I bought a second one of the same model "Desktop" external HDD. It's also partitioned, and the data storage is from a newer machine at full USB 3.0 speed. I can say (happily) that there are no problems. Both of these drives are extremely quiet, run very cool, and do the job they're intended for. These are not a substitute for a "shirt pocket" 2.5" USB-powered portable external drive - just the fact that each has a separate AC power supply makes them "stay put" devices. Incidentally, unlike some AC adapters I've known, the adapter supplied with each of these runs very cool, as they should. They also (miracle of miracles) have the AC connector arranged so that the adapter will sit at a 90-degree angle from a 110VAC outlet or most power bars, which means that they don't cover up other AC outlets. It's a simple thing, but very much appreciated. I purchased my 2nd of this model HDD during the "Black Friday" sale, so the price was 15-20% lower than "list" - finding something you need anyway, and then on sale is a bonus. The elderly Hitachi 3 TB drive mentioned in my original review has retired, although I check its functioning about once a month, since it holds documents that might still be needed. It did yeoman service and for its time, was at the higher end of the technology pool. That said, both of these WD 6TB (actually about 5.8 TB) drives are smaller, quieter, cooler, and have much faster i/o than the earlier generation unit. They do come with a high-grade data cable, but it's only about 1 metre/3ft. long. Should you need more length, it's well worth the small extra investment to buy a high-quality data cable, rather than "cheapest." I try to keep cable lengths as short as is practical, since there is a measurable loss of data transfer speed when a long cable is used. Fortunately, not a problem in this case. I have no hesitation in giving this unit 5 stars - I liked the performance of my first purchase that I bought another - admittedly for a specific job, but still excellent in all respects. This is not the cheapest drive available, but the cost is money well spent. Five more stars.

So far so good. Extremely happy with this drive. I read the reviews and watched the prices for various sizes for months. I have learned that Amazon changes prices 10 million times per day. So, if you are looking at a certain drive with different sizes it can be like whack-a-mole. I finally got the 16TB for $100 less than the 14TB. Prices change constantly and when I bought this it had the lowest price/TB of all the sizes. I had been watching the 14 TB. I only ever purchase WD drives.

I was surprised by the small size of the drive. From the reviews, I was a bit concerned about possible noise. There is zero sound except you can hear it start up. It’s also cool i.e., barely warm to the touch. I was also surprised to find that it’s a 7200-rpm drive. This is not stated anywhere and is impossible to find on Google or on the WD website or literature. I literally had to test the drive with Crystal disk to learn the RPM. A tiny light on the front of the drive blinks when it’s recording. The drive goes to sleep when not In use. I am using it to back up a NAS that has 5 hard drives ranging in size from 2 to 6 TB. I highly recommend this drive.
Two Month Update - Working fantastic. Backing up my Synology NAS as shown in video. The USB drive is totally silent, no vivration, no heat and goes to sleep when not in use

I picked up the 14TB version almost 2 months ago. My purpose for it is to backup my NAS (TrueNAS, no compatibility issues. SMART works fine)

When I first received it, I hooked it up to my Windows PC to do a quick and basic performance test (nothing crazy, just copying files to and from). I was able to get +200MB/s in Windows when copying larger files. The speed drops with small files, but that's expected.

After hooking it up to the NAS, write speeds are pretty consistent between 100MB/s [smaller files] & 160MB/s [larger files] during backups (since it's for backups, I have a fair bit of compression enabled which slows things down a bit. Software encryption is also enabled. This is more a limitation of the NAS CPU, not so much the drive I think). Performance wise, I'm very happy with it.

One thing to note, and made me concerned even before purchase, was the listed operating temps at 5C to 35C. Except when first powering up after being powered off for a while, the temps are always higher than 35C. Being a WD drive, this honestly doesn't surprise me. After looking up the actual drive specs (it's a white label model #: WDC WD140EDGZ-11B2DA2 in my case) the critical max temp is 77C, recommended max is 65C, max 56C and avg max 51 [ https://smarthdd.com/database/WDC-WD140EDGZ-11B2DA2/85.00A85/ ]. I found the drive was pushing close to 60C after extended periods of writes (took a few hours), with it generally idling (but still spinning) at around 50C. I think the issue is that the rubber feet/pads are VERY thin and they restrict the passive airflow. I put a couple 'shims' under it, raising it to ~4mm off its resting surface, and the temps dropped by ~5-10C for both extended usage and idle (even after 3 hours of heaving writing, the temp doesn't go above 51C now). I would recommend doing the same until WD adds thicker pads themselves. [FYI, the ambient temp in the space it lives is generally between 20 & 25C]

Operationally, it's super quiet! I think this was the most surprising aspect of it. My previous external HDD that this is replacing was notably louder under load.

Overall, I'm very happy with this drive, with my only concern being the limited airflow to keep temps down due to the too thin foot pads.

well you surely get what you pay for. i could have got a 32TB drive for less money but i bought a 16TB drive from that cheaper brand not 4 months ago and it is already showing signs of failure. I won't list the brand but i will say the name begins with the letter A. that is all i'm going to say about it. they are known to have cheap drives. i have a 12TB drive from them and that one too is already showing signs of failure. i've had that drive for no more than 5 months. i'm going to wipe the drives and send those back to get an RMA. anyway, i have a 6TB WD 2.5" external drive and the thing runs perfect. never one issue with it. had it for over a year now. I also have a 8TB WD External had that thing for 2 years and neveer one issue with it either. this 20TB drive should last a while. i get 234MB/s read and write throughput. It formats to about 18TB so not too bad.

If you’re in search of reliable and expansive external storage solutions, look no further than the Western Digital 18TB Elements Desktop External Hard Drive. With its impressive capacity and dependable performance, this external hard drive is a game-changer for content creators, graphic designers, and video editors alike.

I recently purchased the 18TB variant of this external hard drive, and I must say, I’m thoroughly impressed. Prior to making this investment, I had experienced the unfortunate demise of a competitor’s 12TB drive. Thankfully, I was able to retrieve all my data, but it was a stark reminder of the importance of choosing a reliable brand.

Western Digital has proven itself to be just that – reliable. Unlike my previous experience with another brand that exhibited concerning cracking sounds, this Western Digital drive operates quietly and smoothly, a testament to its solid engineering and durability.

What’s particularly appealing about Western Digital’s lineup is the wide range of capacities available, ranging from 4TB all the way up to a whopping 22TB. As a content creator with demanding storage needs, having access to such expansive capacities is essential for backing up my work and ensuring I never run out of space.

Speaking of which, as a content creator, graphic designer, and video editor, storage space vanishes in the blink of an eye. That’s why having a high-capacity external hard drive like the Western Digital 18TB Elements Desktop External Hard Drive is an absolute necessity. It not only provides ample space for storing large media files and project backups but also offers peace of mind knowing that my valuable work is securely backed up.

In fact, I’m so impressed with this external hard drive that I’m already considering upgrading to the 22TB model in the near future. After all, when it comes to safeguarding my creative assets, there’s no such thing as too much storage.

In conclusion, if you’re a content creator, graphic designer, or video editor in need of reliable and spacious external storage, I highly recommend Western Digital’s Elements Desktop External Hard Drives. Trust me, it’ll make your life a whole lot easier and your workflow much more efficient.
