Sustainable transport is a key pillar in Amazon’s commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, and our recent participation in the OECD International Transport Forum (ITF) Summit 2024 in Leipzig, Germany, exemplified this commitment.

An Amazon delegation joined over 1,200 attendees from around the world, including 45 transport ministers, secretaries, and under-secretaries from ITF member countries, as well as corporate partners, NGOs, and academia to explore solutions for greening the transport sector.

The theme of the summit was ‘Greening transport: keeping focus in times of crisis’. The summit examined the transport sector’s role in environmental sustainability, and assessed the impacts of climate, health, and geopolitical issues in this context.

As a member of the ITF corporate partnership board, the summit gave Amazon a valuable platform to share insights and meet with the policymakers, corporates, transport operators, associations, and NGOs who attended. This year, the Amazon team participated in three sessions:

  1. Accelerated pathway for road infrastructure corridors: This session was jointly organised by the Smart Freight Centre (SFC), World Economic Forum (WEF), and World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), and showcased the ‘Accelerated Public Charging’ project led by SFC using Amazon’s CHALET open source tool – aiming to optimise charging location decisions based on the truck’s origin/destination and load volumes.
  2. Greening road transport: Marina Lussich from our worldwide operations sustainability team joined a panel with speakers from LKW Walter, FlixBus, Michelin, and the World Bank, highlighting our investment in road electrification and calling for charging and financing for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to be scaled up.
  3. Decarbonising aviation: Marina also moderated a panel on making Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) more affordable and accessible for all, with speakers from Virgin Atlantic, Rolls-Royce, BP, and Brussels Airport.

After the summit, Marina said: “Our participation in the ITF Summit aligns with Amazon's commitment to environmental sustainability, to our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint across our operations and to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. We are committed to exploring innovative solutions and leveraging our expertise to drive positive change in the transport sector.”
