Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Stated Second Edition. The First Edition was published in 1949. The book is signed by the author on the first front end paper. The inscription reads To Doris Moffat from Betty and George Marion, San Diego, Dec, 3, 1954.' You can see the covers in the photos. They are in very nice condition, very clean, the lettering on the front and spine is nicely bright. I don't see any soiling on the covers. The edges and corners are in excellent shape. The spine ends have a little bit of crinkling, nothing else. The page edges look very good. The binding of the book is solid from cover to cover. The covers themselves are also solidly bound. The interior of the book looks very good. Scrolling through, I didn't find any conspicuous soiling. A number of later pages have a very light semi-crease at the bottom corner, far from the print. I didn't see any other creasing. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And the author's signed inscription is the only writing to be found anywhere in the book. I did find one page that had a few tiny bits of rubbing over a few words in the print, not enough to prevent one from reading any of these words. There is also a slight bit of minor rubbing at the outer margin of one page, not touching the print. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It's in very solid shape. It has only the slightest bit of wear. The flaps are in solid shape. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. The one-page interesting Introduction is written by Dashiell Hammett. Howard Fast is quoted on the rear flap: 'A brilliant and important job! What a different complexion the political scene in America would have today if every American could read this book!' A reviewer from The National Guardian States 'As exciting as a Hammett whodunit.'. (quarter-bound black leather over blue-gray cloth-covered boards, with the Falcon in black leather (with silver trim and red eye) on both front and rear covers; silver lettering on spine; in slipcase, with no dust jacket, as issued) [a beautiful copy, with both book and slipcase utterly unblemished]. (B&W photographs, endpaper maps) The best edition of Hammett's hard-boiled classic, issued in a printing of 400 copies, each signed on the limitation page by the director of the Arion Press (whose 11th book this was), Andrew Hoyem. Beautifully printed and bound, with the red-eyed Black Bird in leather on both covers, the book is illustrated throughout with black-and-white photographs (44 in all, a mixture of vintage and contemporary shots) of the many San Francisco locations that were the setting for the novel, plus a tipped-in frontispiece portrait photo of Hammett and a double fold-out panoramic photo, captioned "Sam Spade's San Francisco: Panoramic view of the city from the bay." All in all a beautiful production -- truly the, uh, stuff that dreams are made of. And what can I say about the book itself, which is as much of an exciting read today as it was when it was originally serialized in the pages of "Black Mask" in late 1929? Let's also give posthumous thanks to John Huston, who just knew -- even though the book had already been the basis for a couple of mediocre movies (in 1931 and 1936, the latter under the ridiculous title SATAN MET A LADY) -- that there was a great film still to be made from it. (And note for the record that nobody has (yet) been stupid enough to try and remake it -- because you can't improve on perfection.) ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this moderately heavy book; the purchaser will be contacted prior to shipping for confirmation of these charges.**** Signed by Contributor.

Hammett writes to Army buddy "Gottlieb.your go sounds like a good one, but I don't think I'd trade places with you. All the good goes aren't in the States. For instance, I'm now running a post daily newspaper and make my own hours, which means I usually choose to work at night, and we have an eleven p.m. mess for night workers. And then again it's more than six months since I have (1) answered a rollcall.(2) been in a formation.(3) taken a step as in marching of any kind, (4) tied a necktie around my neck, (5) shined a shoe, (6) had anything inspected, (7) had a crease in any of my clothes, (8) had to bother about whether I was in uniform - we wear whatever we like.(9) paid more than a nickel for a pack of cigarettes, (10) had to look at anybody policing an area, (11) had a lights-out time, (12) had to make a bed.(13) had to bother about how my clothes were hung or what was piled on my shelf or on the floor around my bed, (14) -- but that ought to be enough to give you the idea. We salute and we do our work and that's about all the Army asks of us. The eating and drinking situation has eased up for me, but it would be pretty fine if we could have those evening assemblies of ours again.Oh, well, we'll probably get together again during our training period for the next war. My antique frame has held up pretty well so far--I guess I'm going to last the war out." He signs in pencil, "Hammett." With typed envelope. The letter offers insight into Hammett's army life. He enlisted after Pearl Harbor and after the US Government dropped age requirements for enlistees. Hammett was a veteran of World War I where he contracted Spanish flu and tuberculosis. He subsequently pulled strings in order to join up during World War II after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Hammett spent most of the war in the Aleutian Islands, where he edited a popular Army newspaper "The Adakian," from 1944 to 1945.

To Prudence Whitfield, wife of Raoul Whitfield, a fellow "Black Mask" writer and one of Hammett's closest friends. Hammett and Prudence (Pru) shared a wealth of correspondence and many are written, signed or addressed in a manner that feed the speculation that they were lovers, even while he was in a relationship with Lillian Hellman. Our letter is addressed to "Pru darling" and signed, "Much love, sweetheart." with initials "SDH." Hammett talks about the letters he had received from her, of which there were many. She apparently wrote daily at that time. He also talks about it being winter in Alaska, saying, "We're a pretty white world." He comments on life in the Army and about writing. "Of my own affairs in the Army there isn't a single God-damned bit of news," but notes that "sitting here at ease in my newspaper hut, putting on a little weight and practically bloated with health, I've no trouble being phlegmatic about it all. This is by no means the worst way of fighting a war that any enlisted man ever found, and if it's got to go on like this I aim to endure it." Hammett then discusses editing Jean Potter's book, "The Flying North." "Jean Potter sent me some chapters of her book on Alaska bush pilots to exercise my editorial pen on, so I'll probably have. fun with that. swell stuff in the book." Jean Potter was a well-respected author on aviation and Alaska who, in 1945, published "The Flying North," a classic work about flying in Alaska's early days through to World War II. Potter worked for Time, Inc. as well as for "Fortune" magazine which sent her, in 1940, to Alaska. She then went back again in 1943 as a free-lance writer to research her book, "The Flying North." An obituary from January 8, 1997 (SFGate), states that the book was edited by Dashiell Hammett who was serving in the armed forces in Alaska." In "Lillian Hellman: A Life with Foxes and Scoundrels," by Deborah Martinson (page 96), Hellman is quoted as saying, "I'm not at all sure I would have written without Hammett" and further, that she "forever after praised his talent and assistance in her writing career." Also noted is, "As Jean Potter, another young writer he helped, commented, He seldom changed anything himself, but asked questions, forcing the writer to look, to make appropriate changes.'" The letter ends with chit chat of what he's been doing, including sleeping "like a log," a comment to Pru's telling him she is not sleeping well. He further states, "I don't want to suggest it's because my conscience is clear." He also tells her that his "lads are playing basketball at the island gym" and finally, about comments that the war will not be lasting much longer, "There are a lot of dreamers in the world.".

Yes, the Eskimo girls at Nome are often very pretty, usually very good-natured and practically always very diseased. Yes, Kodiak is a little gem, whether you want to shoot, fish, drink or futz around with dames." Hammett continues for another paragraph with discussion of his future travel plans, closing "I'm going to.get something to eat before I go back to bed--and with a bottle, brother, always with a bottle here! Luck to you, keed." This is the only letter to Gottlieb that was included in Selected Letters of Dashiell Hammett, ed. Layman, 2001.
