Nothing CEO Carl Pei has revealed when we can expect the Nothing Phone (3). And it isn’t this year. Mr Pei shared this information through an X.com post. In the post, he also showed off some of the UI designs and AI (artificial intelligence) concepts in the works. One of the highlights is a multi-modal AI companion. Let’s see how Carl and the company envision AI in smartphones.
Nothing Phone (3) launch timeline
Carl Pei says Nothing Phone (3) will launch in 2025. Its predecessor, the Nothing Phone (2) had launched in July, 2023. So, the company seems to have other plans in the meantime.

In the video, Mr Pei reveals the Phone (3) will be armed with AI features that are currently in development. His team has however teased some of those features:
Nothing Phone (3) AI features
Carl thinks, “smartphones will remain the main consumer AI form factor for the foreseeable future,” “because people love their phones”. So AI will be integrated into smartphones to evolve the user experience.
AI will be baked into the Nothing OS (operating system).
This will allow the Nothing OS homescreen to be revamped as a “hub of contextual, relevant information“. So, when it’s publicly available, you will be able to see more dynamic and context-aware elements on the Nothing launcher.
The Nothing team kept the best attraction for last. It demoed a “highly personalised companion“. This AI companion looks like the recently out GPT-4o. Nothing was the first smartphone company to partner with OpenAI and allow its phone users to access ChatGPT from the Nothing OS homescreen.
This AI companion looks like a logical next step. Nothing software engineer Walid talks to this bot and it responds like a human. The bot has eyes that give it more of a human-like feel. Also, since it’s multi-modal, it should be able to process various data types like images, text, and speech.
Since there’s still a minute before Nothing Phone (3)’s arrival, we are tempering our expectations till then.
Towards the end of the video, Carl Pei also talks about how the company has been just building the necessary blocks to achieve Nothing’s mission of making tech fun and products inconspicuous.
