🔍 What technology do we need to scale quantum computers? The entanglement fabric. Discover this and more in the recording from our panel “Enabling the Modular & Scalable Quantum Data Centre” at the The Economist 3rd Commercialising Quantum event. Panel features: Elham Kashefi - Chief scientist, National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) Dan Holme - Technology innovation lead, Cisco Steven Herbert - Head of quantum algorithms, Quantinuum Carmen Palacios-Berraquero- Founder and chief executive, Nu Quantum and Jonathan Legh-Smith - Executive director, UKQuantum Here are some key takeaways: 🌐 Why not Monolithic Quantum Computers (QCs)? Monolithic QCs architectures are not scalable. Instead, we’re looking at modular and scalable strategies, that are also more efficient (you need fewer qubits for useful computation). 🔧 What Do We Mean by Modularity? Large engineering systems hugely benefit from modularity. Constructing a large and efficient computing fabric from small, robust and performant QPUs (Quantum Processing Units) and QNUs (Quantum Networking Units). 📈 Where Are We Technically? We are at the cusp of demonstrating scaling up QPUs via quantum networking. This will shift the industry's focus from the scientific challenges of R&D to the engineering challenges scale-up manufacturing. New developments such as verification and benchmarking for distributed QC are also crucial. 🖥️ QCs Will Not Operate in Isolation Quantum Computers will be deployed in Data Centre environments, and need seamless integration with CPUs, GPUs and High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems. Designing and testing to allow this integration is paramount. 🏭 Making Quantum Data Centres Enterprise-Ready Ensuring operational excellence involves focusing on repeatability, reliability, automation, and sophisticated telemetry. These 'business service' requirements are better enabled via modular architectures. ⚖️ Democratically Accessible Regime Modular and scalable QCs will democratise access to cutting-edge quantum technology, ensuring broader and more equitable utilisation. 🚀 Furthering the UK National Missions The UK’s Quantum Computing Missions, particularly the top 2 - the Quantum Computing and Quantum Networking Missions - align well with Nu Quantum vision for scaling. The support, funding and discussions with industry and the UK government multifaceted approach are required to develop a sustained growth for a quantum ecosystem that are both state-of-the-art and practical for industrial applications. 🌐 💥 Our CEO Carmen Palacios-Berraquero was at Bloomberg Live with Tom Mackenzie discussing how #QuantumNetworking is revolutionising quantum computing from the lab to a scaled-up disruptive technology, and how the UK is a global leader in quantum technology. “We are bringing about a similar moment to what happened to classical computing(…), having main frames in single computers and now we have the power to interconnect them to build something like the cloud…" “The UK is today a world leader on quantum, on many metrics - number of startups, funding, number of patents, it’s consistently top three.” See the whole interview here: https://lnkd.in/eycadQ3x
