Design and ergonomics

The new Sony Xperia 1 VI is exactly the same as the older Xperia 1 V in terms of design if we don't count the wider aspect ratio.

The device has a unique design that we love to bits. It may not be flashy or eye-catching, but it's definitely a design that makes sense in any setting or occassion.

The Xperia 1 VI is made of some of the highest-quality materials there are - Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the front, standard Victus on the back and aluminum side frame. The whole build is also IP65/IP68-rated against water and dust. But the best part are the textured surfaces covering both the back and frame.

The back panel is matte, covered by a unique grippy texture that's reminiscent of the pill blister pack and is not only nice to hold but keeps fingerprints and smudges away.

And along the side frame run tiny textured strips which provide plenty of grip as well. Since the new Xperia is wider than the previous one, a grippy texture is needed even more.

There is an argument that could be made that the texture makes the phone feel less-than-premium because it doesn't really feel like glass; more like plastic. Either way, Sony chose function over looks, so kudos for that.

The Xperia 1 VI comes in Black, Platinum Silver and Khaki Green colors. As evident, we have the Black version with us.

The right side of the frame hosts all the buttons - the volume rocker is placed right above the power button and both are conveniently placed. However, the power button that doubles as a fingerprint reader lies in a small indentation and makes it hard to press. Not to mention the power button is mushy and doesn't provide any feedback.

Speaking of, the fingerprint part is excellent - the scanner is fast, reliable and responsive. You can even change the behavior from always-on to press-to-unlock, whatever suits you better. Still, we would have liked an under-display fingerprint reader as it's more versatile and easier to use than a side-mounted one. For instance, people using the phone with a left hand or those who often unlock the device when placed flat on a desk won't like the available solution.

Other than that, the Xperia 1 VI has a nice and functional design that won't be needing a case too.
