Corning: optical properties now matter as much as durability on smartphone glass

We asked the company about Gorilla Glass Armor and the new 7i and what motivated their creation.

Anonymous, 05 Jun 2024What makes you think these Chinese glasses are any good? ... moreThat is what I always ask as well

Every about 10 years some company remembers they can do almost non reflective screen with almost no light scatter - samsung tvs are good example, but s90d and s95d comparison is missing on the old ones that use actual anti reflective tech, like q80r.

Understandably using actual anti reflective solution with touch screen is another level of challenge.

Issue seems to be marketing, seems to be hard to sell screen that you can actually see during the day, especially with TVs seems like people believe lab equipment measures and their eyes. If you get the reflections, you do not get contrast that is measured, because black is now pink or yellow or whatever the reflections is. So instead of 1 000 000 : 1 in real world your contrast is 40 : 1. If that. Weird that it is so hard to market this. Maybe people do not have working eyes?

Glad i am swapping my phone every 2 years. So i am not bothered by 4-5 years old phone even updated to latest OS and UI but useless for new games and apps because of outdated hardware.

I think it's either a matte coating orr a middle-ground between glossy and matte, that's why it looks cool in daylight but the graininess is there at low light. The lights get more diffused than a glossy one, take a look at any pic.

It's not magic. It's either a really good middle ground between matte and glossy or a super light matte coating. The graininess at low light and the diffusion of lights leads me to believe that. Take a look at the S90D compared to the S95D on RTINGS's site. You'll see a super similar output.

jiyen235, 04 Jun 2024wow man they acting like matte coating is a revolutionary t... moreIt's not matte coating. Matte coating scatters light so it looks like there's no reflection, but makes the screen quality worse.
Anti reflecting coating let's more light through like the ones on spectacles. Normal glass reflects about 10% of light. That's why you can see reflection on windows. Coating can reduce that reflection to 1% (e.g. no white saucer eyes for spec wearers with coating when flash goes off). I think there was a demo video of the coating on phone, looked good. However benefit is reduced when you put on a screen protector. Hopefully companies will start making anti reflective coating for screen protectors too, it's not that hard.

If only the glass could withstand falls directly on the face or edge of screen. Putting on a screen protector will add on to the reflectivity again, unless companies start selling coated glass screen protectors.

Shamrock Sean, 04 Jun 2024And you're such an expert are you?? did I say I was? Nope, I'm just pointing out that it's just marketing bs for the most part.

Take a look at the S95D compared to the S90D in RTINGS's site. The coating is perfect for bright situations but even then, the base picture isn't as beautiful as the glossy one. Then there's the picture in dark situations where matte just fails because the lighting is diffused leading to a hazy look. So what happens is you get a less clear image for the most part.

It's all about preferences ofc, you might like the reflection handling of matte but there's nothing "new" about it. Corning's just acting like it is because basically no one even wanted to do matte coating on a phone, it's more niche for the most part and that's why only now has it been utilized on a popular phone.

Darth Caesium, 04 Jun 2024I mean having it without the typical obvious downsides and ... moreyeah it's best to see how it is IRL but based on just pics, it doesn't look good to me. I mean, if I wanted a matte screen I could've just gotten a matte glass protector yk? You can always put something OVER the clear, clean screen. But you cannot remove the coating and stuff yk? So yeah I think there's that option. I wish there was a way to switch coatings or something.
