NOT to appease, but to piss off the US.
Chinese are basically giving US back their own medicine. They will do everything to keep the algorithm close to their control, while in US give something more generic version to authorities to play with. Exactly opposite of what US wants, basically control of the super-secret-ingredient algorithm.

More like the US will replace the tiktok algorithm if the sale goes through so it will incessantly spew US propaganda. But the sale won't go through and tiktok will end up being shutdown in the US unless the Court actions put a halt to the sale or ban process.

The problem is not with the code itself. Its willingness of the platform to do something like manipulate user with message like "force your senator to stop tiktok ban"
