Even o... moreIf 8 small-core configuration would have sufficed for 99% users, we would have seen at least one chipset manufacturer making such a product, to be used in the very basic smartphones. But there is a reason such a configuration is not used anymore. Even the basic smartphone tasks nowadays use a decent amount of computational power. A cortex-520 is even slower than Cortex-A73 at iso-frequency, and phones with Cortex-A73 do struggle when using most apps nowadays (which have progressively become computationally more intensive).
And it's not only about peak performance. A bigger core (A7xx/ A78) has better performance/watt than a smaller core (A5xx/A55) except at the very low end (less than 0.10-0.15 watt). So for most everyday tasks, basically whenever the phone is awake, a chipset with an A7xx/ A78 would be more efficient than a chipset with only A5xx/A55 (assuming same manufacturing node).
The end result would be a phone which has visible lag in even tasks such as browsing/video playback/ camera use, while at the same time poor screen-on times.

Anonymous, 30 May 2024Not everyone wants to turn phone into playstation. Even o... moreOcta A53 is Helio G3x level, i.e. barely usable in today's usage. Octa A55 would be somewhere around Unisoc T606 level, which is only suitable for light usage. Octa A520 would be somewhere around a Snapdragon 720G. So, octa A5x cores will only be suitable for the lightest of loads.

Even octa A55 would be enough to satisfy 99% of users.
Just like years ago SoC with octa A53 could.
I'd rather have eight A520 made at 4nm than old unicoc or mediatek with A75/76 made at 12nm.

At iso-frequency, the small cores (A55/A510/A520) are less than one-third as powerful as respective mid core (A78/A710/A720). That level of single-core performance won't cut it nowadays, even for simple tasks.

Why is it a curved screen?
Now it just looks the same as the edge phones.
Stop it Moto!

Anonymous, 28 May 2024Just go for Moto Edge 50 Fusion. I checked the specs and it uses cheap crapp-o-led technology too :(
Motorola if you can hear me please use the excellent IPS LCD display panel technology for this phone or else NO BUY!!!

Anonymous, 28 May 2024Qualcomm probably avoids moving 4 and 6 series to armv9 to ... moreYou won't see an octa A5xx because A5xx are very weak cores, and are only suited as small cores for standby / very light tasks.
In my view, the numbering scheme should have been something like this (which wouldn't have required much departure from the current scheme)
4 series: 2 mid-cores (A78/A7xx) + 6 small cores (A55/A5xx) - [processors: 4G1, 4G2]
6 series: 4 mid-cores (A78/A7xx) + 4 small cores (A55/A5xx) - [processors: 6G1, 7G1, 7sG2, 7G3]
7 series: 1 large core + n1 mid cores+ small cores [processors: 7+G2, 7+G3, 8sG3]
(where n1 could be smaller than n2 in 8 series, could re-utilise the last gen 8 series architecture)
8 series : 1 large core + n2 mid cores+ small cores
On the issue of A78+A55 vs A7XX+A5XX, A710/A510 were very inefficient cores, even worse than A78/A55. A710/A510(v2) barely caught up with A78/A55. That's why we didn't see much adoption of these cores in mid-range chipsets and chipset manufacturers have been sticking with A78/A55.
A720/A520 are the first real upgrades over A78/A55 and we should see wider adoption of these cores henceforth.

What is Motorola doing making this series with a curved display? It was one of the few semi decent options that had a flat display.
As others have pointed out, go with a decent and cheaper MediaTek chip. Qualcomm's cheaper chips are rubbish, and its decent chips are ridiculously expensive and have poor efficiency. It's time for OEMs to boycott Qualcomm.

RaviSS, 28 May 2024Yeah, looks like it will be the same shenanigans as 6G1/ 7s... moreQualcomm probably avoids moving 4 and 6 series to armv9 to save money.
Imagine this :
4 series: octa A5xx
6 series: dual A7xx + hexa A5xx
7 series: quad A7xx + quad A5xx
8 series : mono Xx + quad A7xx + triple A5xx
This should have been done already

I was really looking forward to this phone. I didn't even mind (so much) the relatively underpowered SD 4 Gen 3 SOC, as this device will be reasonably priced here, performance will be class typical, and more than sufficient for the average user. What really bugs me is the display. I just loathe curved displays.

Anonymous, 28 May 2024So, 4g3 and 6sg3 seem to be same chip. Both overclocked 695Yeah, looks like it will be the same shenanigans as 6G1/ 7sG2, where 7sG2 was just an overclocked 6G1. Similar strategy of using the same chip with two different number series has also been done in the cases of 7+G2 / 8+G1 and 7+G3 / 8sG3
Personally, I don't like this bullshit confusing numbering scheme.
