Geely announces next-generation 200 Wh/kg Aegis LFP battery

Geely announced its new lithium iron phosphate battery today, calling it Aegis. The unit is also known as a "short knife" or "dagger battery" similar to BYD's blade battery. Geely's new battery promises to outdo BYD's tech in terms of safety, longevity, charging speed and low-temperature discharge performance.

The new Aegis batteries boast 200 Wh/kg energy density - comfortably above BYD's 150 Wh/kg and way higher than the indusry averages. The individual battery cells are 580mm long instead of the 960mm length often seen in today's batteries.

The company demonstrated that even when punctured, the battery doesn't explode or catch fire even 8 minutes after being pierced. The battery's surface temperature didn't go beyond 40°C either. Moreover, the battery had no issues even after being submerged in salt water for 2 hours.

Perhaps that's the reason why Geely has trademarked its new battery as "Geely bulletproof batteries" and "Aegis bulletproof batteries".

The new generation Aegis battery packs will debut with Geely's upcoming Galaxy E5 SUV, which will launch in early August. The vehicle will offer 49.52 kWh and 60.22 kWh packs, offering up to 273 miles and 329 miles of range, respectively, according to CLTC.

That's all lovely but how much does it cost compared to BYD's offerings ?
