Targus Debuts Backpack With Find My Integration

Targus today announced the launch of the Cypress Hero Backpack with built-in Find My integration that works with the Find My app on Apple devices.

Priced at $150, Targus says that the backpack combines eco-friendly materials, laptop protection, and a built-in location feature to keep tech items safe. The backpack can be tracked through the Items tab in the Find My app, right alongside AirTags and other trackers.

There is a padded laptop compartment that fits laptops up to 15.6 inches in size, a main compartment for files and gear, a smaller pocket for accessories, and a quick-stash pocket at the front. It features a 22L capacity and a padded back panel for a comfortable fit.

The included Find My location module uses a CR2032 battery much like an AirTag, and the battery should last up to 300 days depending on usage.

Targus first announced the Find My-compatible backpack in November 2021 and showed it off at CES 2022, and it appears to have taken well over a year for the accessory to actually launch. This is not the first Find My backpack on the market, as Hyper (owned by Targus) also has a Find My-enabled backpack.

The Cypress Hero Backpack can be purchased from the Targus website as of today.

Seems silly to pay to develop your own find my module. What possible advantages does the Targus module provide that an AirTag doesn't?

Would be easier and more cost effective to just build in an AirTag pouch.

Because that would be too smart, too flexible, and cost too little.

I think it’s a good idea. A permanent tag built into the backpack. It’s one less thing busy families have to think about; it’s done and trackable out of the box.

I think it’s a good idea, as AirTags can be removed and deactivated or destroyed but seriously up to a 15.6 inch screen when your target market is owners of Apple products who do a 16 inch screen is rather self defeating in my view

A backpack should be $15-40.

Sure, for an extremely basic and small bag that will only last for a short period...but $80+ is the going rate for backpacks with quality fabrics, quality hardware, quality construction, organizational features, and long, generous warranties. So depending on the specs of this Targus pack, $150 might not be a bad price.

Personally, I'd rather pay more $$$ up front for a backpack that is going to last for years (and that will be repaired or replaced by the maker for free for as long as I own the item) than save a few bucks by going with a budget brand.

Underwhelmed - I've had a sleek, form fitting eBag for years with Tiles and now Air Tags. The equalizer is all tracking devices at some point are going to need a battery change - get the bag you want and pair it with an Air Tag. ZZZZZZZzzzzzz

Ditto. Targus's announcement doesn't mention ultra wideband (UWB), which is integrated into AirTag.

I hope WWDC brings much needed Family Sharing support for AirTags and Find My Items.

Unless that’s explicitly stated I would expect this to work exactly like an AirTag. The chip is probably 100% identical

Identical, except you can easily remove an AirTag, but not this module.
