For photography...
I was going to say that 3:2 seeks like a strange aspect ration, but then doing some simple math says that is the same as 4 X 6.
Has 4X6 (or 3:2) always been the standard aspect ratio for photography? (What about 8 X 10?)
For videography, how long has 16:9 been used?
It was invented by NHK in 1991, I believe, but it didn't become commonplace until the demise of CRT TVs in the mid-2000s.
Edit: I might be mixing it up with something else: Wikipedia says it was SMPTE in 1984, not NHK in 91.

My apologies, I did not distill that from your original post and the title
I started of this thread asking about the aspect ratios, because I have my iPhone 11 Pro Max set to 16:9 for photos - because I like the wide angle look more.
However, I have heard that my iPhone's native photo aspect ration is 4:3 and that when I shoot 16:9 all iOS is doing is cropping the original 4:3 native photo, which means I am not accomplishing anything other than help with framing.
Furthermore, so people say that when you change away from the native photo aspect ratio, you are actually deceiving yourself - similar to when you digitally zoom in - because what you are looking at is a zoomed in version of the original sensor size.
So ultimately, I am wondering if I am doing myself a disservice shooting photos in 16:9?
MODS: Is this the correct forum, or should this be in the Photography forum?
Now, as far as video goes, I guess you can't change that and are stuck with 16:9 aspect ratio - which is kind of the current industry standard, right?
