Basically, I want to mount an SFTP location the same way, for example, OneDrive mounts its storage, downloading files automatically as I access them.

Preferably something free, or at worst one time purchase with no subscription cost.

Has anyone used and been happy with something like this?

Use rsync – standard command line utility. To know how to use start terminal and type:

man rsync

Or google it

Mountain Duck (not free) does not use File Provider framework, but does mount SFTP (and other cloud storage) as NFS shares, keeping a cache and downloading on demand. Functioning very like File Provider but with some advantages: a) the mount point and cache can be on an external disk, b) optional end to end encryption. I use it for OneDrive.
