I often press individual characters by mistake, and that triggers hotkeys and things I don't want, I want to see what keys have been pressed within the past few seconds to see exactly what hotkeys and things are triggered.

Would something like "Macro Recorder" work for you?
No I'm not trying to make macros here, I just want to see a list or some display or all the keys I pressed within the past few seconds. There are many apps that show GUIs of the keys you have pressed, I wonder if they can keep them up for a few secs.

“Keyboard recorders” are pretty commonly used in malware and in macro recorders, so there’s probably something out there for you. Not anything I’d have interest installing due to the likelihood of it being bonded to malware, though.
