Geely Auto Group has released a new power battery based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry as it steps up its bet on the key component for electric vehicles (EVs).

The battery, the Aegis Short Blade Battery, is Geely Auto's next-generation, in-house developed battery with best-in-class battery life, charging speed and safety, the company said today.

The battery has an energy density of 192 Wh/kg and a cycle life of up to 3,500, which is equivalent to driving 1 million kilometers with minimal impact on range, Geely Auto said.

Based on the average family driving 20,000 kilometer a year, the Aegis Short Blade Battery has a service life of up to 50 years, which significantly extends the usage life of the battery and improves the residual value of used cars, it said.

The battery effectively solves the problem of high internal resistance of long blade batteries currently on the market, according to the company.

The Aegis Short Blade Battery uses long, thin carbon nanotubes to create a "highway" for ion transmission, and adds additives to improve film permeability, making it easier for lithium ions to travel between electrodes, thus improving fast-charging performance.

Among the blade batteries with the same capacity, the average charging time for a long blade battery 10-80 percent is 26 minutes, and the average charging rate is 1.61 C, while the average time for the Aegis Short Blade Battery is 17 minutes and 4 seconds, and the average charging rate is 2.45 C, Geely Auto said, citing test data.

In addition, the Aegis Short Blade Battery has strong discharge capacity in extremely cold environments and has a much longer range than long blade batteries, the company said.

At -30°C ambient temperature, the average capacity retention of long blade batteries dropped to 78.96 percent, while the Aegis Short Blade Battery retained 90.54 percent of its capacity, according to Geely Auto.

In terms of safety, the Aegis Short Blade Battery utilizes a high-strength, thermally stable, heat-resistant diaphragm, and the high-stability diaphragm is paired with a safety electrode for higher energy density and safety, it said.

Geely Auto applies its in-house developed self-fusing technology to the electrode surface to stop short circuits in the event of an accident.

A test showed that the Aegis Short Blade Battery was simultaneously pierced by eight 5-millimeter-diameter steel needles at the same time and left to stand for an hour with no ill effects.

In addition, the battery passed six extreme tests including seawater corrosion immersion, extreme cold environment, high-frequency pack bottom scraping, 26-ton overweight rolling, single-pack side collision, and fire roasting, according to Geely Auto.

The Aegis Short Blade Battery will first be used in Geely's Galaxy series of E5 all-electric SUV (sport utility vehicle) model.

Geely Auto's batteries have been supplied mainly by suppliers including Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (, SHE: 300750), while it has also been developing its own batteries.

The company had formed power battery joint ventures with CATL, Farasis Energy and South Korea's LG Energy Solution over the past few years.
