Cities must be proactive in facing the climate crisis, says UN Climate Change Coordinator Niklas Hagelberg, the coordinator of the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Subprogramme on Climate Change, emphasizes the urgency for cities to take proactive measures in anticipation of the climate crisis. Highlighting the recent heavy rains that impacted over 80% of Rio Grande do Sul cities, Hagelberg underscores the profound impact of extreme weather events on communities. Vulnerable cities across the globe must anticipate and prepare for more frequent extreme events by upgrading infrastructure, implementing early warning systems, improving energy efficiency, and educating communities on disaster preparedness and response. In Brazil, potential disasters, including droughts in the Amazon and Northeast and floods in the South, highlight the need for comprehensive planning and adaptation strategies to protect populations and natural resources. 🌳New publication: ‘The economic consequences of environmental enforcement: Evidence from an anti-deforestation policy in Brazil’, authored by Erik Merkus. The study looks at the effects of Brazil's Priority List policy, an initiative aimed at curbing deforestation by intensifying monitoring and enforcement in municipalities with high deforestation rates. This policy not only significantly reduced deforestation but also had notable positive economic outcomes for the local communities. 🔍 Key Findings:  📉Deforestation Reduction: Law enforcement activities were effective in reducing deforestation rates, with estimates suggesting around 30% lower probability of deforestation compared to areas without law enforcement present. 📈Economic Benefits: These municipalities experienced an increase in GDP per capita, indicating that stringent environmental policies can coexist with economic development.  🏘️Poverty Alleviation: The Priority List policy contributed to a reduction in poverty, with a noticeable decline in the share of households relying on conditional cash transfers. The Santa Catarina State Research and Innovation Support Foundation (Fapesc), in partnership with the Inter-American Institute for Research on Global Change (IAI), opened a public call for the training program "Tropical Forests in the Americas : transdisciplinary approaches for changing environments". The free online course will take place in June 2024 and, upon completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate issued by IAI (in English and Spanish). The target audience includes researchers, public policy makers, civil society organizations and community leaders. Types of application: 1) Transdisciplinary teams composed of at least one social science researcher, a science researcher and a non-academic actor;  2) Non-academic individuals interested in being incorporated into transdisciplinary research teams. The international transdisciplinary teams will work to produce innovative solutions to issues related to the following thematic areas: deforestation, sustainable development and locally led economy; ecosystem function, connectivity and climate change; environmental justice and governance. The International Climate Initiative's (IKI) Country Call Brazil is inviting submissions to an ideas competition that precedes funding or commissioning within the framework of the country call. Participation in the ideas competition is open to German and international grant recipients, as well as to implementing organisations of the German Federal Government. Interested implementing organisations are invited to submit a project outline responding to one of three thematic priorities (details in the link below): 1: Decarbonisation of emission-intensive industrial sectors  2: Combating deforestation in the Brazilian biomes Cerrado, Caatinga, Pantanal, Atlantic Rainforest and Pampa  3: Climate change adaptation in vulnerable urban territories: Cooperating with communities and strengthening local governments  The deadline for submitting project outlines for the ideas competition is 28 May 2024, 4 p.m. (CET). One project per thematic priority will be selected. #NewPublication | A new study by CPI/PUC-Rio proposes 10 recommendations for the structuring and implementation of the Brazilian Sustainable Taxonomy, the first national classification system for investments in sustainable activities, based on mapping of national and international initiatives.  🌿 The taxonomy is a tool of the Ecological Transformation Plan, coordinated by the Ministry of Finance, aimed at aligning the country's economic development with environmental protection and inequality reduction.  ✅ For an efficient implementation of the Taxonomy, it is necessary to define technical and precise sustainability criteria that can be verified and monitored at scale. 🌾 The adoption of distinct sustainability criteria impacts which financing flows can be considered sustainable. The study shows that there is a significant variation from 1% to 44% of the volume of credit granted in the agricultural year 2022/23, depending on which sustainability classification is adopted.  🌳 Brazil has a unique opportunity to lead the climate agenda as president of the G20 and future host of COP30. Today is International #Biodiversity Day and we at Refloresta are writing this post from #Brazil, a country with a huge opportunity to fund effective action on biodiversity loss via #highintegrity #naturebased solutions projects. The #Cerrado #savannah gets less public attention compared to the specular Amazon rainforests, and yet, it is said to be the World's most biodiverse savannah - both above and below ground. 🐀 200 mammals species 🐦 800 bird species 🐊 180 reptile species 🐟 1200 fish species 🍀 11,000 plant species, around half of them are only found in the Cerrado and are of critical importance to local communities. 🐚 There are 60 endangered species of which 12 are critically endangered 🐜 In addition, the Cerrado is known as an "upside-down" forest, with 70% of forest biomass being below ground and storing 35 tons of carbon per acre. Living organisms in the soil are crucial to keep this underground ecosystem alive - from bacteria, to fungi, to macroinvertebrates like earthworms, they are producers of organic matter, nutrient recyclers and soil engineers. Maintaining #soilbiodiversity is essential to keep the Cerrado Biome ecoystem functioning from the bottom up. The corporate and finance sector here in our country is increasingly committing to channel investments into preserving Brazil's biodiversity - our most precious asset and the foundation of our economy and society. We at Refloresta are creating #forest #conservation and #reforestation project in our country's biodiversity hotspots, with a focus on the Cerrado and Amazon biomes. Maximising on biodiversity #impact is our default position and a non-negotiable. On March 20th, the #Instituto17 launched the project "Integrating the Mitigation of Short-Lived Climate Pollutants into National Agricultural Strategies." This initiative marks a decisive step for Brazil in advancing the reduction of methane emissions, one of the principal greenhouse gasses produced by livestock. A project of this magnitude is only feasible due to the partnership and participation of institutions that share knowledge and provide crucial support. Embrapa Swine and Poultry, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, and the Climate & Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) are our essential allies on this journey. @Marina Bortoletti (CCAC), Airton Kunz (Embrapa Suínos e Aves - Embrapa Swine and Poultry), Sidney de Medeiros (Ministerio da Agricultura - Ministry of Agriculture), and Alessandro Sanches Pereira (Instituto 17) shared their perspectives on the project, their expectations, and the challenges involved. These solutions include ecosystem restoration, reforestation, and conservation efforts, all aimed at stabilizing and regulating water flows to prevent droughts, floods, and natural disasters linked to climate change. Applied in pilot projects across Colombian watersheds, Water Credits enhance watershed resilience against climate change-induced disasters. This methodology enables precise quantification of water regulation, encouraging businesses to invest in water security. How can public markets contribute to sustainable development in emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs)? This MOBILIST research report, compiled in collaboration with the Brazilian Stock Exchange (B3) and the Global Infrastructure Hub, considers how public markets can mobilise private capital to close the climate finance gap in Brazil and other EMDEs. It analyses the unique attributes of listed stocks, bonds, funds, and other products that make them well-suited to meeting financing needs in EMDEs and discusses some of the associated risks and mitigants. The #G20 provides a space to increase attention towards climate action, especially focusing on the scaling and acceleration of climate finance. Last month, Climate Policy Initiative together with the Institute for Climate and Society, CEBRI - Centro Brasileiro de Relações Internacionais, and CONCITO convened a high-level roundtable to discuss how to strengthen the climate finance agenda, and developed a report outlining the key actions for the Brazilian presidency. Indonesia and India set the stage for the G20 to act on the financial architecture reform, now is the time for the Brazilian G20 Presidency to lead its implementation, focusing on the MDB and IMF reforms, tackling the cost of capital, climate risk, and international taxation.
