Logistics with real-time management of work activities at a construction site, including building materials and human resources, is an innovation for micro and small enterprises starting up in the construction sector. Enterprises of this size are being run using traditional turn-of-the-century technology tools, namely, excel spreadsheets as data storage. This paper presents a case study of technology implementation at a startup enterprise in the Belgian construction sector between 2018 and mid-2020 and discusses the challenges needed to overcome during the period of digital transformation. A multi-environment logistics platform was designed and prototyped following human-centered design principles enabling the enterprise to move forward and improve work methodologies to work with real-time data. Results after 18 months demonstrated an increased efficiency in all work processes, with a reduction of losses in all aspects of work activities and improved control of production estimates and measurements..

    Abstract
The self-sensing ability of materials, in particular carbon fiber polymer composites (SSCFPC), is a must-have requirement when designing a structural monitoring network for remote assessment of structural serviceability. This work presents a study using an Artificial Deep Neural Network (ADNN) where is evaluated the electrical resistance (R) output of specimens subjected to an unchanged deformation state of 2,86% strain for prolonged periods of time. Six ADNN architectures are evaluated with varying numbers of neurons on pre-defined hidden layers, sharing the same four data inputs and one output. The dataset is based on 3,276 data points collected during the experimental campaign of an innovative electrode design embedded in SSCFPC specimens. The effect of the number of iterations and the architecture of the neural network, is investigated in proposed ADNN models. Simple moving average (SMA), and moving Standard Deviation, are determined and plotted in terms of z-score to assist in performance evaluation of proposed ADNN models. The optimal ADNN architecture is found among six proposed architectures and for each of the four SSCFPC mixtures.

Nowadays there is much confusion about mechanical power and human power. Frequently found both calculated using the same mathematics and models. However one needs to have in mind both represent totally different “technologies”. One being a mechanical inherent set of technologies and the other biological inherent that we are only now starting to better understand. With different boundaries and operational requirements. How the definition of labor in economics relates to the definition of work in physics is an important requirement for the digital transformation happening in societies everywhere. Current advances in technology, particularly health-related technology, can be of use in collecting live data from work activities that enable accuracy improvements in determining amounts of work for labor activity.

This article investigates the dependency of temperature on electrical resistance (R) change in micro carbon fiber polymer composites (MCFPC), for further development as an IoT sensor from previous research works. Three mixtures were prepared using Dow Corning’s Silastic 145 as base polymer and made vary fiber content weight percentages: fiber diameter to length ratio ∅⁄l 75 and carbon fiber content of 10% and 13%; ∅⁄l:15 and carbon fiber contents of 40% and 50%. Composites tested were submitted to temperature loading, with a constant strain of 0.0%, for assessment of R when a change in the composite’s temperature occurs. It was observed that composite’s response follows an Arrhenius function, for temperatures ranging from -10°C to 40°C. The apparent activation energy was calculated to evaluate further differences between carbon fiber contents and the sensitivity factor, S_T, due to temperature is determined. Specimens were also put to test with a constant strain of 2,86% for assessment of creep. It was found creep and R, over the period of time in analysis, to best fit a discrete latent variable model. The sensitivity factor changes in regard to stress relaxation, S_R, is determined. The properties of MCFPC investigated here can be used to establish relationships between electrical resistance outputs and environmental loading conditions for this type of composites, enabling the possibility of deployment as part of a management system network for structural monitoring with real-time data acquisition.

In order to develop a cost-effective carbon fiber reinforced polymer sensor for compressive strain monitoring, a study was carried out to assess electrical and piezoelectric properties of samples containing five different carbon fiber weight percentages. Testing focused on sensing ability throughout measurement of resistivity: (1) when submitted to uniaxial variable compressive strain; (2) to time prolonged relaxation at constant strain; (3) and influence of environment temperature on measurements. Results enabled the possibility of usage for live monitoring of samples by determining sensitivity values of each sample being tested. Electrical resistance measurements assessment test results, show real time resistivity change in respect to experienced strain. Further piezoelectric properties where determined. An exponential decay function was found in fractional resistance in respect to relaxation due to constant strain testing. The total amount of time needed for measurements to present an error less than 1% at the probes was determined and found to vary up to seven days. Strain reversibility of resistivity measurements varied according weight percentages of carbon fibers used in composite sample being tested. Samples were tested in situ for monitoring of displacement on foundations of a dwelling to be built, placed on foundation’s soil. The main objective here was to assess practical questions such as handling and how measurements could be made safely. Results demonstrated successful monitoring during construction phase with easy deployment on site, sensing each construction phase loading.

Maintaining and operating civil engineering infrastructure has been acknowledged as one of most important issues worldwide. Among the possible causes, the structural deterioration is particularly important, due to safety reduction over its lifetime. Structural deterioration mechanisms tend to be a slow process and time-dependent controlled by safety and operation threshold specifications. One of the deterioration parameters is chloride-induced corrosion of steel in reinforced concrete structures. Chloride diffusion models are based on second Fick’s law, the time dependency of the diffusion coefficient, the age and temperature effects. The time dependency of the diffusion coefficient depends on many factors, namely the w/c ratio as well as the cement type and content. An extensive research has been done on the age effect parameter, however, results from previous studies show to a given extent that no general consensus exists.

On this paper is discussed the life cycle of steel and reinforced concrete structures using a simplified life cycle analysis. The developed methodology consisted in quantification of a series of parameters both economic and environmental that characterize both reinforced con- crete and metallic structures. Based in the life cycle analysis, five parameters were selected in order to make the assessment, in witch: energy consumption, water, CO2, SO2, NOx. A database was developed into a software program that can perform life cycle analysis of these types of structures giving their physical properties. As a result the software outputs the total amount of emissions caused by the production of a given structural element as well as determines the structural costs giving in the end a global project analysis.

    Summary
The overall objective for this open project aims extending the life of vehicles by means of updating them to current EU standards namely safety regulations and emission pollutants. As so vehicles undergo a process of refurbishment service and full-featured overhaul of technology updates from mechanical key components to the interior habitacle, comfort, and safety of a vehicle. Branded Auto RFTI™ (refurbishment, facelift, and technology improvements) goes a step further to just a vehicle facelift and will differentiate by offering simple & easy hardware electronics and components for extending vehicle utilization life by means of technology upgrades to improve safety while at the same time reduce vehicle emissions.

Design and prototype OEM hardware electronics capable to the same operation and functionality for all Volvo's with the common chassis P2, period 1998 to 2009 (S80, S60, V70 XC70, XC90), using the existing wiring on those cars (backward compatible). Instead of using closed and protected logic, it uses open hardware and open firmware hardware electronics as a direct replacement into existing* wiring in a vehicle, in particular older cars. This will facilitate repeatability and maintenance on any "repair shop" outside authorized dealers. And requires no reverse engineering and no modification to make it work in a vehicle.
To achieve this task I will be using the electronics and electrical wiring of a donor car I already have. This will serve as a ground base to commercialize automotive solutions using an open business logic (open hardware and open software) for other car brands and models. Including LPG systems.

Since last June 2021, amid Covid-19, I’ve been designing a live data acquisition device (LDAD) for monitoring sensor data. This was on my ToDo list since ~2006 when i was a junior researcher at Minho University (see previous prof. experience). where i did a digital transformation of the construction materials laboratory with remote experimental data.

This project is about an innovative proof-of-concept method for management of collected experimental data in real-time and compatible with any open environment. The proposed proof-of-concept smart DAQ device has the minimum hardware characteristics to handle data measurements collection from sensors locally connected to it, store it on a local CSV or SQLite database file and finally connect and synchronize data measurements collected with a data repository hosted remotely on a Dataverse.

In parallel is currently being written a sci. paper, in an open environment format. Available as a prePrint draft document at Elsevier's SSRN platform. https://ssrn.com/abstract=4210504
