About this item

  • Q950 is the flagship model of the Q Series range, featuring the KEF signature Uni-Q driver array paired with 200mm (8 inch) long-throw bass driver and matching ABRs; With the latest enhancement in acoustics and design, Q950 brings high resolution sound with extraordinary depth and exceptional clarity
  • At the heart of the evolved Q Series is the Uni-Q driver array; The signature innovation places the tweeter in the acoustic centre of the midrange and bass cone, bringing the acoustic ideal of a single point source closer than ever to realisation; The result is a more detailed, accurate three-dimensional sound image, which is dispersed more evenly throughout the room than is possible with any conventional speaker; Uni-Q's ultra-wide dispersion is further enhanced through KEF's 'tangerine' waveguide over the tweeter dome
  • With the addition of the damped tweeter loading tube providing a gentle termination of sound produced from the back of the tweeter, lower treble performance is improved dramatically and a new low-distortion inductor on the crossover provides cleaner bass
  • The closed box midrange cabinet design reduces the load on the Uni-Q midrange cone, increasing clarity and detail while delivering cleaner, punchier bass; Midrange clarity is enhanced again through improvements to the mid-bass driver that allowed the DC blocking capacitor to be eliminated; Its removal also created a more natural bass roll-off between the drivers
  • Low-frequency (LF) drivers now have a larger roll surround, along with a new suspension to produce cleaner bass at high volumes; A new cone structure improves midrange clarity, and an enhanced Auxiliary Bass Radiator (ABR) with a new surround and rear suspension delivers better controlled and more impressive bass

I just wish amazon would clearly state state if it is one speaker or two that you are purchasing, ringing the help line to clarify was a complete waste of time

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly Refined Power

TLDR: Great, accurate, clear, effortlessly powerful and a pleasure to listen to. Give these time to break in, feed them with a good amp with lots of power for one of the most accurate replication of recordings you'll hear.

Purchased each side separately: Oct 2020 for CAD$570+tax (Warehouse deals), Nov 2020 for $750+tax (Kef Store, sale)

Audio Quality: The Q950s are high quality, well engineered speakers that produces a clear, accurate, neutral/balanced, effortless sound. Easy to drive and will work with most amps and receivers. These are so good that you cannot tell which speaker the sound is coming from at times and can place the position of the instruments, voices and other sounds in relation to each other easily. I've tried this with a couple receivers, the better they are-- the better the sound.

Ease of use: These are very user-friendly speakers-- very easy to set-up and place in any room. Creates a large, airy, open sound stage, and sound amazing regardless of the room and where you sit. You don't need to fiddle with position, laser pointers, string, seating and other ridiculous things to achieve perfection.

Applications: Perfect for listening to music, home theatre and parties. Can easily be part of a larger home theatre system. These things can fill a small auditorium easily.

Build Quality: Very strong sturdy cabinet. Their overly expensive grill are recommended for areas with any amount of traffic.

Appearance: The matte dark black colour makes them disappear in any home theatre setup. While they are large, tall speakers, they are understated and become less noticeable over time. Dust is easily visible and will pick up nicks and scratches over time.

Assembly: Minimum assembly needed for the feed. Minor annoyance is that tweezers are required to remove the caps in the banana plug connectors.

Response & Feedback: I have often been told how clear my music is, especially the tightness of bass, from friends who never talk about music/sound quality.

Tips for the rest of us (Non-audiophiles):
- Break in: Straight out the the box, on first use, these might sound painfully high pitch/screetchy. Play them frequently for a few weeks and you'll end up with a neutral sounding set of speakers.
- Tone control: These are neutrally tuned audiophile speakers and will comparatively sound flat. Use your amp's equalizer/tone control to get the sound you like; for a warmer sound-- add some bass. Or play with the treble for brightness, add mids for voice and movies. These speakers can be anything you want with a little tinkering.
- Amp: Very easy to drive, virtually anything works, but a good powerful amp makes them sound out of this world!

This is one of my few luxury buys-- and absolutely don't regret it.

Judging speakers is very personal. What one person likes another would not. However these speakers are very smooth, non fatiguing, yet have good detail which is not in your face. Good bass, and mid range. If you want more treble presence you may require an adjustment to your treble control or look to different speakers. As mentioned. They do not include grills, and at this time they are difficult to get. They are on back order at KEF. Also, I would have liked to see something that was able to be put on wood floors included, rather than only the metal spikes for the out riggers. I had to purchase something to go under the spikes to protect the floor or just rest the speakers on the floor with out the spikes They are also only have single pair of binding posts so no bi-amping. As far as looks I have them in black and like the textured finish. All in all I like these speakers a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably good.

I’ve owned these about 8 months now and figured it’s time to write a review. First off, I am constantly amazed at how good these sound. They are simply incredible.

I wanted to get away from my 5.1 system which was difficult to wire up every time, hide the wires, mount the speakers, adjust the sound, and never sounded quite right for music. Good for movies, but not music. So I decided on a 2.1 system with floor standing speakers. Did my research and settled on these as not only did the have good reviews, but they looked good too.

I will say, they do like power. At first I used my 7.1 A/V receiver to power them with only 55 watts per channel. They sounded ok in the mids and highs but lacked bass. I eventually got a dedicated 2 channel amp, the Yamaha R-N803 with 145 watts per channel and WOW did it wake these speakers up. The bass was so good I almost didn’t need a sub any more (but I like lots of bass so kept it, just turned down a lot) and the mids and highs went to a new level. I love how everything is matched, it all meshes so well. Nothing is harsh, nothing pierces the ear or sounds muddy or is out of place. The bass doesn’t drone. Sitting in the middle of them I can close my eyes and sound stage is insane. Voices are where the should be, instruments are where they should be. And I have yet to push these speakers to their SPL limits but I have turned them up very very loud, they just don’t even seem to be breaking a sweat. Zero distortion.

To sum it up, I do not miss my surround system at all. I hope to keep these for many years and will look at KEF in the future if the time ever comes again.
