Punkt. MC02 5G Secure phone, Smartphone with Apostrophy OS, Built-In VPN, Data Privacy and Digital Security, 128 GB Storage, 6 GB RAM, Unlocked – BlackThis is a solidly built phone even if a little plastic feeling. But seems like it'd hold up to a few knocks here and there. It comes very well-packaged and feels like a semi-premium product. The idea of this phone is that all data is encrypted and sent via servers in Switzerland, and keeps any third-party services 'walled off' internally from the rest of the phone. A year subscription is included but after that, you will need to pay to take advantage of the phone security featureHowever, this key selling point of this phone - its super-secure tin-foil-hat level of data protection is also its downfall. As a result of wanting to distance itself from Google (despite being Android-based, despite what the OS name would lead you to believe), it doesn't come installed with the Google Play Store. You can jump through many hoops until you have it installed, but it feels a bit hacker-ish in its process. Without the Google Play Store, it barely feels like a smartphone, which is what almost everyone will be expecting when they buy a phone of this price (£599 at the time of review). Even with Google Play Store installed, you quickly realise that this is a low-mid tier spec phone dressed in a secret-service uniform. It's generally a bit sluggish in day-to-day use. The OS is extremely drab and devoid of all colour (you might even mistake it for a monochrome screen). The camera is appalling given what else is available at this price point. The spec and performance would be fine on a sub-£250 phone, but it's just not acceptable for one that costs more than double that - even with its super-paranoid security features. If you're the kind of person who despises modern technology and is constantly worried about which companies have your data (spoilers - they all already have your data) then this is for you. For the rest of us, I wouldn't bother with this one. Unless it's heavily discounted on sale.

The device is missing essentials for any Android smartphone.

    These include the following:-

    No android Auto
    No google Wallet
    No real Home Screen

The bugs are very evident with constant white screens being met when trying to us the app drawer.

I have returned the device and have been told it will take up to 2 months for a refund by Amazon. This is disgusting and will lead to me cancelling my account with them. DO NOT BUY THIS DEVICE! DEFINITELY NOT FROM AMAZON!!

This secure phone puts your privacy above all else. With secure servers, a built-in VPN, and no hidden trackers, I feel confident my data isn't being sold. It lacks some modern "smart" features, but for those who value privacy, it's a compelling choice.

The Punkt. MC02 Smartphone stands out as a revolutionary device, integrating power, security, and privacy seamlessly. Its compatibility with 5G technology ensures swift and reliable connectivity for browsing, video calls, and multimedia downloads. The Apostrophy OS operating system guarantees maximum security and data privacy, shielding against external threats and intrusions. An integrated VPN ensures anonymous and secure internet surfing, protecting against tracking by third parties. With generous memory (128 GB internal) and RAM (6 GB), it offers ample storage and responsive performance. Its durable battery allows for extended use without frequent recharging, ideal for busy professionals or travelers. The primary drawback lies in the paid subscription for Apostrophy OS after the first year, necessitating a monthly or annual fee for continued advanced protection. Nevertheless, the Punkt. MC02 excels as a reliable, secure, and high-performing smartphone, particularly suited for those prioritizing data protection. Despite the additional cost, the subscription to Apostrophy OS is deemed worthwhile for uncompromising digital security.
Recommended if you're tech savvy and want a super secure phone.

I have recently been hacked and have had to go through the painful process of changing email address, passwords and ordering a new debit card. No idea how it happened, but it did and it's been a nightmare.

I was intrigued by this phone after that incident and was hopeful this would be the phone to protect my identity online.

On one hand, it does give me that, it has a built-in VPN which protects your identity and data with its advanced security. There's a cost though, right? Of course there is. You get one year of this advanced security for twelve months and then you have to start paying a subscription. In some ways, I would be OK with that. However, the rest of the phone is too restrictive. No access to the Play store is the biggie for me. I like to just install the apps I want. There is a way around this, but it is such a faff that it put me right off the phone.

Why can't I have the best of both worlds? Advanced security, yet have the convenience of installing the apps I require for my everyday life: maps, music, banking, etc.

While I admire Punkt for giving this a go, I do think they have got their modelling wrong.

The other disappointment for me is the phone itself. This isn't a £600 phone. It's a phone worth half that or less. One of those you get off Argos because you've broken your "proper" phone.

I like the idea of advanced security, but ultimately this phone disappoints.

5.0 out of 5 stars privacy focused but at a premium cost while having average hardware

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
If you want phone that is really privacy focused and doesn't have the latest and greatest hardware this is for you. Or if you are at tech person and want to tinker with it. Wont compare to iPhone, most Samsung, or Pixel phones in terms of hardware (camera, videos, etc).

Very privacy focused. The Punkt MC02 runs on an operating system called Apostrophy. It’s based on Graphene OS, another privacy-conscious operating software. Apostrophy builds upon the foundation of Graphene OS and adds its own secure apps to the phone, such as contacts, storage, email, files, tasks, and more. It also offers a Digital Nomad VPN app to protect browsing data.

The data from all the Apostrophy apps is stored in servers located in Switzerland, no matter where you use the phone. The EU is famous for its strict data protection laws, and that’s why the company insists on banking data on Swiss servers. Monthly subscription after the first year (to keep the privacy features/VPN). So it will be cell phone bill plus the subscription.

    No eSIM capability.

The Google Store/apps are not installed by default. You can install if you want (use the GMS wizard on the phone). Some folks will say having Google Store/apps will risk your privacy.

Check out Punkt's website if you want more details. There are also other tech sites that have reviewed the phone (Google for 'Punkt. MC02 reviews')

3.0 out of 5 stars Ottimo smartphone per i maniaci di privacy..ma poco altro
Reviewed in Italy on 19 April 2024
Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )

5.0 out of 5 stars Ein Handy mit Zukunft
Reviewed in Germany on 24 March 2024
Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )

3.0 out of 5 stars A good thought, but the execution wasn't perfect
Reviewed in the United States on 7 May 2024
Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
I really wanted to give this phone a good rating when I ordered it - I am very privacy-conscious and the idea behind this phone intrigued me. However a few things prevent me from outright recommending this phone.

The best summary I can give of the issues with this phone are - it's too expensive for the features it provides. It runs on a MediaTek Dimensity 900 chipset, which first showed up in Androids back in 2022, and those phones were priced around $300 at the time. This phone isn't slow, but it's not as fast as a $700 phone should be.

I could overlook that if the privacy features were really well-executed, but they're not. In order to use most of the privacy features that this device advertises, you'll need to sign up for an Apostrophy services account. This phone includes a "1 year free trial", which allows you access to the "built-in VPN" on this device, as well as a personal mailbox, ending with @aphy.io. After the year free trial is up, this service costs a whopping 15 CHF ($16.50 USD at time of writing) per month!! That's a hard sell, when it hasn't been made clear why this VPN service is any better than the thousands of cheaper VPN providers on the market. I'll also mention that their VPN offers a very paltry three endpoints to choose from, the US, Germany, and Japan.

As for the webmail, I don't really want to migrate everything tied to my email over to a service that is new, untested, and expensive. At the end of the day, you're just choosing who to place your trust in, with regards to your data security, and as far as I know, Apostrophy services hasn't been independently audited like a lot of VPN providers have, their webmail portal is just a reskin of an open source webmail app called Roundcube, and they haven't really given me any reasons to trust them over "Big Tech" companies.

The idea for this phone may be well-intentioned, but I just wouldn't recommend it as it is today.
