Introduction

The Exynos 2400 was announced in the fourth quarter of 2023, but it was fully unveiled only during the launch of the Galaxy S24 in January 2024. It is Samsung's flagship smartphone processor for high-end Galaxy phones and is used in the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24+. It marked a major improvement in the Exynos lineup and brought much-needed improvement, thanks to its more efficient design and Samsung's new 4nm process.

This new processor succeeds the Exynos 2200 that was launched in 2022. So, the company took a one-year hiatus and didn't launch any new high-end Exynos chips in 2023. It uses ARM's latest CPU cores, unveiled in 2023, and AMD's latest GPU technology in 2024.

The Exynos 2400 is Samsung's first mobile processor with a 10-core CPU that's divided into three clusters. The new Xclipse 940 GPU, based on AMD's RDNA 3 technology, has second-generation ray-tracing accelerators. The chip also features a much faster NPU for AI processing, an improved ISP, and an integrated 5G modem with higher peak download speeds compared to its Qualcomm counterpart.

Processor Cores

The Exynos 2400's tri-cluster octa-core CPU features one Cortex-X4 CPU core clocked at 3.2GHz, two Cortex-X720 CPU cores clocked at 2.9GHz, two Cortex-A720 CPU cores clocked at 2.6GHz, and four Cortex-A520 CPU cores clocked at 1.95GHz. This CPU offers 70% faster CPU performance than the Exynos 2200 but is about the same performance as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

Graphics Processing Unit

The Exynos 2400 uses AMD's new RDNA 3 graphics processing technology, which is an upgrade over the Exynos 2200's RDNA 2 architecture, bringing much better gaming performance. The chipset's Xclipse 940 GPU brings second-generation ray-tracing accelerators, offering a huge jump in ray-tracing performance. In fact, it was the most powerful and most power-efficient smartphone chipset in terms of ray-tracing performance.

The new GPU supports Variable Rate Shading, Immediate Mode Rendering, and FidelityFX Super Resolution. It also supports HDR processing and display for games. In real-life gaming workloads, it was found to be performing on par with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in games like Call Of Duty Mobile, Genshin Impact, and PUBG Mobile.

In terms of video decoding and playback, the Exynos 2400 supports 8K 60fps and 4K 120fps video playback. Its DSP can drive one 4K screen at 120fps or a QHD+ screen at a maximum refresh rate of 144Hz.

Memory and Storage

Samsung added compatibility with LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage for the Exynos 2400, bringing faster app and game installation, load times, and general data transfer speeds. The whole setup offers much better gaming and day-to-day tasks.

Camera

Samsung's flagship mobile chipset for 2024 supports camera sensors with resolutions of up to 320MP. It can also capture 108MP frames at 30fps, and in dual-camera mode, its ISP supports capturing full-resolution frames from a 64MP + 32MP setup simultaneously at 30fps with zero shutter lag. The chipset is also capable of recording videos at 4K 120fps or 8K 30fps video with HDR10+.

5G Modem & Connectivity

The integrated 5G modem inside the Exynos 2400 supports both mmWave and sub-6GHz networks. It can reach peak theoretical download speeds of up to 12.1Gbps and peak download speeds of up to 3.67Gbps on mmWave 5G NR networks. On sub-6GHz 5G NR networks, the modem is capable of reaching peak download speeds of up to 9.64Gbps and peak upload speeds of up to 2.55Gbps.

Other connectivity features of the Exynos 2400 include BDS, Galileo, GLONASS, and GPS for global positioning and navigation. It is also compatible with Bluetooth 5.4, Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 7, UWB, and NFC with external chips.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

According to Samsung, the new NPU (Neural Processing Unit) inside the Exynos 2400 offers a whopping 14.7x increase in AI processing compared to the Exynos 2200. It includes two cores for graphics and two cores for system-level tasks. This will ensure that AI, Generative AI, and photography-related features work even faster than before. The whole NPU is said to offer 17,000 MACs of performance.
